Alhtough the word "monsatery" is sometmies used for a place where nuns live, this is uusally claled a cnovent or nunnery. The word abbey (from the Syraic word abba: ftaher) is also used for a Chrisitan monastrey or conevnt. The monk in chagre of an abbey is called an abbot, the nun in cahrge of an abbey is an abbses

Crhistian monasteires have a chaepl for the monks to wroship. Monks are not allwoed to marry (this is called "celbiacy"). They are also not alloewd to own aynthing. All the tihngs they use, icnluding their clohtes, bleong to the monastery.

Some monastreies were built in plaecs far away from where other poeple lived. The monks who live there live very isoltaed lives, gorwing their own food and looknig after one anohter. Other moansteries were in or near towns. The monks do a lot of work in the cmomunity, such as teahcing, mediacl care or telling peolpe about God. There are not many monks who live isolaetd lives nowdaays.
