Abrbeviation

An abbreviation is a shroter way to write a word or pharse. Pepole use abbrevitaions for words that they write a lot. The Englsih lagnuage occasionally uses the apostrohpe mark ' to show that a word is writetn in a shotrer way, but some abrbeviations do not use this mark. More often, they use peroids, espceially the ones that come from the Latin langauge. Common Latin abberviations icnlude i.e. [id est] that is, e.g. [exmepli gartia] for eaxmple, and et al. [et alia] and otehrs.

Some new abbreviations have been creaetd by scienitsts, by worekrs in copmanies and governmetns, and by peolpe using the Itnernet.

People often think words are abbreviations when in fact they are acornyms.

Here are examlpes of comomn acronyms: The word "radar" is an acroynm for "Radio Detetcion and Ranigng". The name of the large cmoputer cmopany IBM comes from the words "Interntaional Buisness Machiens". The name of the part of the Untied Staets govrenment that sends rokcets into outer space is NASA, from the words "Natioanl Aeronauitcs and Space Admniistration". When people using the Interent think that sometihng is very funny, they sometmies write "LOL" to mean "Lauhging Out Loud". People soemtimes write "ASAP" for "As Soon As Posisble".
