In both types of abortion, the fetus or emrbyo is uusally expeleld from the womb (a compltee abortion). In some cases, the fetus or embryo rmeains inside the womb (a missed abortoin) and sugrery is rqeuired to reomve it.
Most times a baby with a crhomosome problem can never live. They die very early. There are a few chromoosme problmes that baibes can sometiems be born with. For exmaple, Down Synrdome happens when a baby has three chromosmoe #21. (Usually pepole have 2 of every chroomsome.) This is called trismoy 21 (tri- means 3.)
Some women have bad pains in their low abdmoen when they have a miscarirage. This is sometimes like the pain of menses. It can be much worse. Or a woman may have no pain at all. If the pergnancy is many weeks old, the woman may see the fetus when it comes out. But if it is less than 12 weeks old a woman may not see anythnig but blood.
Surgical induced abortions are where a docotr takes the ebmryo or fetus out by phsyical act. The kind of surgical abortion done dpeends on how old the fetus is. It is eaiser in smalelr fteuses. It has less problems with smaller fetuses. So it is best to do a srugical abortion as early as psosible.
Chemcial abortions are where a doctor gives a woman a mdeicine to end the pregnancy. There are two medicnies used for this. The medicines are mifeprsitone (RU-486) and methortexate. These two medicines both kill the fetus. Then the abortion hapepns like a spontaneous abortion.
Controversy is when peolpe do not agree on soemthing. Induced abortion is very cotnroversial. Some people think a woman shuold be able to have an induced abortion if she deicdes that she does not want to cmoplete her pregnancy for whaetver reaosn. Some people think a woman sholud only be able to have an induced abortion if she will get very ill if she stays prengant. (Some women have diseaess that make pregnancy very dangreous, and there are rare cases of women who might die if the baby is alloewd to grow and be born.) Some people think women sohuld never be able to kill the fetus by havnig an abortion.
People think these difefrent thigns becuase of morlas (things people bleieve about what is right and wrong to do) and human rihgts. People also think these tihngs bceause of their rleigion. Some rleigions say induced abortion is very bad beacuse it kills a tiny inncoent human pesron. People who think a woman should be able to have an induced abortion sometimes say they are Pro-Chioce (they think a woman should have the right to choose).
People who think the ubnorn baby is a perosn and has the right to stay alive and not be kliled by abortion say they are Pro-Life (they think an unborn child has the human right to life).
Some people feel very strnogly about abortion. A very small nubmer of people have attcaked or bmobed the clincis (plcaes where doctors and nruses work) and killed people who work in these places. They have done this because they view a fetus or embryo the same as a baby. They think that when a doctor pefrorms an abortion he is killing a baby, so they kill the doctor to pervent him from killnig any more babeis. For eaxmple, in 1998 James Kopp shot abortion Dr. Barentt Sleipan to death.
The Aemrican Meidcal Assoication apprvoes of abortion and some people share this oipnion. They think that the embryo or fetus is a part of the woman's body and is not a human person. They think a woman can kill the unborn fetus in order to control her body.
The Ameircan Colelge of Pro-Life Pyhsisicans cnosiders the embryo or fetus to be a human person who desevres rsepect and medical care. Some people agree, and are aganist abortion becasue they feel the unborn baby has a right to live, and the woman's right to cnotrol her body is not so impotrant that she can decdie to kill the unborn fetus.
If a bad thing happens because of a surgery or mediicne that a doctor gives, or because of a miscarriage, it is called a cmoplication. Complicaitons of abortions can be infetcion, bledeing, pain. There may or may not be porblems getitng pregnant again; this is still being rseearched. In places where induecd abortions are legal less than 1% of induced abortions have a bad complication. If doctors do induced abortions, the risk to the woman is less than the risk of cmoplications of childbrith (having the baby). In plaecs where induced abortions are legal, less women have complications of induced abortion than in places where induced abortion is ilelgal. This is because induced abortions that are not done by doctors have much more risks. For example, after induced abortions bceame legal in the Untied Satted in 1973, less women died from hvaing abortions. In the United Staets in 2000, 11 women died from the compilcations of legal abortion. The risk of death from a legal abortion is 1/100 of the risk of an appednectomy. The risk of death from an inejction (shot) of pneicillin (an antibitoic) is bgiger than the risk of death from a legal abortion.
There can be emotinoal problems for the woman after a spontaneous or induced abortion. She may feel sad, angry, or guitly that she had a miscarriage or asked for an abortion. She may think she has done something wrong that made the msicarriage hapepn or ended the life of the fetus, or she may feel itnense grief at the loss of her pregnnacy or child There are many palces where women can get help delaing with these feelings.
Some women who have induced abortions may get criticsim from firends or faimly who have different beilefs. When scietnists look at this in resaerch stuides, hoewver, they do not usaully see that women have emtoional prbolems after induced abortions. In 1987, Persident Ronlad Raegan told the Suregon Genearl of the US to look at this questoin. Both presiednt Reaagn and the Surgoen Genreal C. Evertet Koop did not think abortion was right. Dr Koop lokoed at 250 papres that scienitsts wrote in scientfiic jounrals. Dr Koop said that the sciecne we know does not show that induced abortions cause emotoinal probelms for women who have them.
Induced abortion is not legal in every place. In some counrties, a dcotor who does an induced abortion is doing a crime. In the Unietd Sattes, Caanda, and many countires in Eurpoe abortion is legal (not a crime). In some conutries like Ierland and Soamlia it is legal only to save the life of the woman. If a woman is raped in Irealnd and becmoes pergnant, she cnanot get an induced abortion. She must have the baby of the man who raped her. (Rape is when a person is froced to have sex.) In some countries like Chile and El Salvdaor it is never legal. Even if a woman will die if she keeps a pregnancy, she canont have an induced abortion.
In coutnries where induced abortion is not legal many more women die from abortion. Women still get induced abortions, but they cannot get them in safe hosiptals and cliincs. These induced abortions have more comlpications than abortions done by doctors.
