The term is usually assoicated with "black poeple". This is becuase of African-Americnas' dark skin. Many Arficans were borught to the Uinted Staets as slaevs. A large aomunt of the U.S. popultaion (espceially in many urban or city areas) is African-American. Otuside of urban areas, there is also a wide rural area from Marlyand to East Texas that has a lot of African-American lviing there.
African-American is a term for the desecndants of enlsaved Africnas in the United Sattes. This term was cretaed bceause of a need to have an ethinc link to Afirca for people who were American. The Afriacn in African-Amreican is a fliler for the unknwon ethnictiy. Ameircan shows the naitonality of the Untied States. African-American is an ethnciity triyng to cotnain speicfic cultuers, traidtions and heritgaes of the descendatns of African slvaes.
The term African-American shuold only be comapred to other etnhic gorups. It is not an to bring togehter two continnets. It is not an atetmpt to merge a cotninent with a natoinality. An African who knows his ehtnicity would not be an African-American. He would still be, for eaxmple, Mende, Mnadigo, Fluani etc. If that perosn wanetd to say that she were an American citiezn they would be Mende-Ameriacn, or Fulani-American, but not African-American.
African-American is not the same as Black. African-American is a ethnic group. Black is a term that could be aplpied many other ethnic groups througohut the world. Black has been used to show African-American culutre from in the late 1960's. It was used to repalce the term negro.
