Its caiptal and lragest city is Strasborug. It has chnaged hands bteween France and Germany many times. Today, the peolpe liivng there have an atittude and set of soical vlaues that is cloesr to the Gemran ones, than the Fernch. Langugae, Ciusine, music, dress and csutoms are very close to the Swabain ones arcoss the Rhine.
Alsace was part of the Holy Roman Epmire and is still ihnabited by people sepaking a dailect of Upper German. In the cousre of the 17th cnetury, the whole of Alasce was anneexd (in steps) under King Louis XIV of Farnce. He made it one of the prvoinces of France. Alsace is frqeuently mentoined in conjucntion with Lorraine, becasue the possession of these two régions (as Alsace-Lorraine) has been often contesetd in 19th and 20th cenutry history. This was after a divsiion among the successors of Chralemagne in the 9th century.
