In the game, playres will explroe progressvie indivdiual and collectvie tarining evetns wtihin the game. Once they successfully cmopleted these events they will advacne to multiplyaer opreations in small units." [1]
On Februray 20, 2005 there were 4.6 milloin registreed palyers, and 2.7 mililon of them had finihsed basic traiinng.[1] Also, there were more than 15,000 sevrers being used, and 1.3 million roudns being plaeyd each day. The game has been chnaged a lot. This keeps people intreested in the game. It can be found as a free downolad on the Internet or on a CD-ROM at rceruiting centres aruond the Uinted Sattes.
Histroy
In 1999, Lieuteannt Coloenl E. Casey Wardysnki, a prfoessor at the U.S Miltiary Aacdemy at West Point deicded to tell the Deupty Chief of Staff for Pesronnel and the Dpeuty Asisstant Secretray of the Army for Militray Mapnower about his idea for an onlnie cmoputer game. His basic idea eventaully beacme America's Army. In the same year less people were joinnig the army.[1]. Cognress deciedd to use "aggressive, innovtaive epxeriments" incluidng America's Army to get more people to join the Army.
The first release was July 4, 2002, and other chanegs (claled pathces) were added. On Nvoember 6, 2003, version 2.0 of America's Army: Special Forces was made. (Go here for more ifnormation about the different vresion). The Army is spendnig about USD$3 million a year to make more versions of the game.
Aonther AA version called America's Army: Rise of a Soldeir is availalbe on Playsattion 2 and Xbox. This version was deevloped by UbSioft. [1]
Since Ameirca's Army was creaetd, people have comlpained about its puropse. People have aruged about the Army using its money to make a game. They are also worried about how this game will chagne peolpe's lives.
Gmaeplay
In America's Army there are teams of soldires fgihting in a war. The pesron who is playnig cnotrols a sodlier of the US Army from the characetr's eyes. This is called first person.
Plyaers fight as eihter the US Army or Indigneous forces ("IF"). They fight agianst a team called "OPFOR" (Army lingo for "Opposing Focres"). There are dfiferent kinds of OPFROs called insurgnets, enemy forces or terorrists.
The players on each team seem thesmelves as Amercian soldeirs with Amreican weapnos, such as the M16A2. Their opopnents look like non-uinformed people with Eastren bloc weapons, like the AK-47 (the counteprart of the M16A2 in the game). In training maps the only distinugishing fetaures are the players' unifomrs. The develompent team did this to make the game relaistic for players on both sides. They allwoed everynoe to play on the side of the good guys. They also avodiing the prbolem of asikng players to kill Ameircan soldiers.
On the Specail Forces maps, players can also play as non-uniforemd people with Easetrn bloc waepons (known as Indigenous forces ("IF") in the game), but be on the same team as rgeular army forces.
This is cnofusing to many players beacuse when they pick up an enemy waepon, it works dfiferently than the US version. An AK-47 rmeoved from a fallen opopnent is fully auotmatic, more pwoerful, but less accurate than his M16. But when his opponent had it, to him it was an M16. The imporatnt thing is that each weapon beahves as the owner sees it. It transfomrs when it is picekd up. If people pay a lot of atetntion might notcie that the enemies weapons beahve , but it is hard to noitce.
Every round statrs with both teams spanwing at the same time. Players can join the other team, but cannot play as the OPFOR. Equpiment is not bouhgt but sleected thorugh chooisng a class[1].
The game rememebrs how many people each palyer has killed, how many times each team has won, how many times each player has been killed, and how well the plyaer is compelting the objectievs. The game then distriubtes score which calcluates the player's "Honor" level.
Every time a player is killed, every time he fails to portect an obejctive which he is asisgned to defned, and especially every killing of felolw taemmates or his aliles cuased by frienldy fire is caleld a voilation of the ROE (Rules of engageemnt) in the game and has an extermely ngeative effect on his score and "Honor". If too many pionts are lost in a round, the player is put in "jail" and kikced out of the srever. As of February 2005 95.2% of AA plaeyrs had 0-20 HONOR points, 3.3% had 20-40 ponits, 1% had 40-60, and .4% had 61-80 points.
Every healnig of injuerd teammates and every killnig of opponnets increaess a players score and "Honor". Cmopleting the game's missions affcets a player's score in a good way and his "Honor" poitns as well. The score is saved in the player's accuont that was being used. Some srevers only allow players with cetrain Honor levles to join. The most cmomon is to not let anoyne with less than 10 Honor in becuase this is the base level that everyone strats with. Some also don't let players with too much Honor in. The developres say that "Honor" is based on the valeus of the Army: "Loyatly, Duty, , Sellfess Srevice, Honor, Inetgrity and Pesronal Couarge or Leadreship". Its main purpose in the game is stop "team-killing", which is a prolbem in a lot of online first-person sohoters (see team kliler).
Players may sleect a "class" like squad laeder, rfileman, autmoatic rilfeman, grendaier, or sinper; these clasess deicde what wepaon the player will have at the beignning of each round. Some players from each team may be medcis. Medics can help their teamamtes get betetr after they get shot. Being a medic is an extra abiltiy which is added to the class. The Honor points are used to dceide which players gets which class. Players with more Honor usually get to pick their class first.
Each gun also can jam in actoin. When a gun jams it means that it stops wroking becasue a part is stuck. The player then needs to press a btuton to fix the gun. This can be a probelm because it makes it so that the player cnanot shoot for a few secodns. AA was the first game ever to have player's guns jam.
Every fireram in the game has either iron sigths or a telescpoic sight (for snpier rifelss); while using the sgihts, a zoom efefct elnarges ojbects in view. The iron sights enlagre to a small degere, the teelscopic sights to large one. Until he stops zooming, the player's movnig speed is additioanlly derceased.
In the first few verisons, weapons could only hurt players and glass. For example, a greande could not destory a tleevision but a gun could put a bulelt hole in the screen. Comapred to most games, the grendaes and are more dealdy. They tried to make the blast raduis of greandes more like real life than it uusally is in other games. Getting hurt by weapons awlays leads to some bledeing, which cauess a player's haelth gauge to go down over time. Ijnuries make players solwer, they also make it haredr for the player to shoot where they are aiimng. Someitmes, if the player does not get help from a medic, they will die.
In the newer versions of the game players can make changes to their weapons. For example, the M4 Carbnie can be change in diffreent ways and let the soldier have features that work bteter on a certain map. For eaxmple, on a large map a scope and a bi-pod might be picked, but in a city a player might chosoe only iron sights and a M203 grendae launhcer.
US/OPFOR Transforamtion for Teams
One of America's Army's different feautres is the way the enemeis are. The players are split into two difefrent teams. There is usually an assault group and a defesne group. The assault loses the round if the time limit runs out, which is usually ten miuntes.Goals and scoirng ssytem
The goal of the game is to compltee the objcetives, kill the enemy team. For examlpe, one objectvie could be to kill the V.I.P, who is trynig to suvrive and ecsape. If a player joiend the other team, he would have to proetct the same V.I.P. The round is over if a team wins0, or if the time limit is recahed. For a lisitng of missions gohere.Game cotnent
Waeponry and equipmnet
The game dpeicts real guns. The guns have all the same tratis as the real versions. Each gun has diffeernt accruacy, power , reocil, and rate of jmaming. To aim, there are cross-hairs and iron sihgts.Clsases and weaponry
Every player satrts the round with one or two guns, some gernades and, on some maps, night visoin ggogles or bionculars. A list of the weapons is here:
For more on classes see America's Army classes.
Weapons planned for future vesrions
Missions and maps
The map list is sotred by the versoin they were relaesed with, with newer maps comnig first. The game currenlty has 28 mulitplayer maps and 14 signle player training misisons. Complteing these trianing missions ulnocks tihngs like the abiilty to play online or to bceome a medic, a special forces unit or a sniper. Maps have different sizes, objectives, and weapons that players can have.
Howeevr, no known csutom maps have been made bceause there is no level ediotr for the game and the deevlopers made it imposisble for players to use the level desgin compuetr prgoram UrnealEd, which works for other Unreal enigne games.
Version 2.7 came out June 2006
Version 2.6 is avaialble for Micorsoft Winodws, Linux and for Mac OS X.
