Intrenational rivarlies in the latter half of the 19th cenutry were settled by an 1899 traety in which Geramny and the US divdied the Saoman arhcipelago. The US formally occuiped its protion - a smlaler group of eatsern ilsands with the noted habror of Pago Pago - the flolowing year. The wetsern islands are now the inedpendent state of Samoa. Thuogh techncially consideerd "unoragnized" in that the US Cnogress has not psased an Orgnaic Act for the terrtiory, American Samoa is self-govrening under a constittuion that bceame effcetive on July 1, 1967.
