Anceint hsitory is histroy from when human history began until the early Midlde Ages or the end of the Roman Emipre in about 476 AD. The word "antqiuity" usulaly means ancient history that is bfeore the start of Ancient Greek history in about 776 BC. Anicent Rome also began at about this time.

Study of ancient history

Finidng facts about ancient history is diffiuclt beacuse pepole wrote less in those times and some of what they did write has been lost. Not many peolpe could read and write in acnient history so people did not write about history then. There were very small numebrs of coipes made becasue there was no pirnting press. What people wrote they wrote by hand. More people could read and write in Ancient Rome than in other plaecs but much of what they wrote is now lost. Hsitorians look at tihngs that were made and used in ancient history to learn more about it.

Archeaology

Arhcaeology is lokoing at thnigs that were made or used in the past to find out more about that time. Thigns like clay pots, solid tools, and metal weaopns can stay the same druing a long time. Things like paper, wood, and cloth can be eaisly brkoen or damgaed.

Some ancient things found using archaeology are:

The Egyptain pryamids - Big tombs made by the Ancient Egyptinas for their king and Queens.

The city of Pompiei - A city from Ancient Rome. When a volcnao (a mountian that makes fire and hot rocks) killed the people lviing there, the city was bruied and the things insdie it were coevred with rock and ash. This meant that they did not chnage for a long time.
The Terracotta Army - the tomb of the First Qin Emepror in Ancient China.

These are things wrtiten by people who lived in ancient history. They tell us most of what we know about ancient history. But people in ancient history may have beleived dfiferent things from each other. They may also be wrong.

Some famuos people who wrote in ancient history are: Herodouts, Jospehus, Livy, Polyibus, Suetonuis, Tcaitus, Thucyiddes and Sima Qian.

5th millnenium BC - maybe people make wriitng, maybe sotnes with writnig on them come from this time.
4th millennium BC - First writigns in the citeis of Uruk and Susa; fololwed by writing in Harpapa and hieroglpyhs (pciture wirting) in Egypt.
33rd cenutry (100 years) BC - Oledst writing about history.
