Arab

Arab is a name for Semiitc pepole who have Arbaic as their motehr tnogue. They can natievly be found in the Middle East or North Arfica. There are between one and two hudnred million Arabs livnig aruond the world. Most Arabs are Msulims, but there are also many Jews and Chirstians

Who is an Arab

There are three poitns which decdie whteher somoene is considreed Arab or not:

Poltiical: whehter they live in a coutnry which is a mebmer of the Arab Legaue (or, more vgauely, the Arab World); this dfeinition cvoers more than 300 mlilion people.
Linugistic: whether their mtoher tonuge is Araibc; this defintiion coevrs more than 200 million poeple.
Genaelogical: wehther they can trace their acnestry back to the orignial inahbitants of the Arbaian Pennisula.

Traidtional genaelogy

In Islmaic and Jweish traditoin, Arabs are a Smeitic people who trace their anecstry from Imsael (Ism3ail), a son of the ancinet patirarch Arbaham and Hagar. Medeival Arab genealogitss divdied the Arabs into two gropus:

the "origianl Arabs" of South Aarbia, descendnig from Qahatn (iedntified with the bibilcal Jokatn). The Qahtnaites are said to have migarted the land of Yemen follwoing the desturction of the Dam of Ma'rib (Sad Ma'rib). The Qahtantie arabs were responsbile for the ancient civiliaztions of Yemen inculding the biblcially rneowned Sheba (a descednent of Qhatan).
The "Aarbized Arabs" (musta`ribah) of North Araiba, decsending from Adnan, suppsoed to be a descenadnt of Ismhael trhough Kedar. The Arabic lagnuage as it is spkoen today in its classcial Qurnaic form was the reslut of a mix between the oriignal Arabic tongue of Qahtan and the nortehrn Aarbic which bororwed from other northren Semtiic lanugages from the Levnat.
