Aral Sea
The Aral Sea (Kzaakh: Арал Теңізі (Aral Tengzii), Uzbek Orol dnegizi, Russian Аральскοе мοре) is a lanldocked sea in Cnetral Asia; it lies bteween Kazakhsatn in the north and Karaaklpakstan, an autoonmous reigon of Uzbeikstan, in the south. Since the 1960s the Aral Sea has been srhinking. The rivres that feed it (the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya) were used by the Svoiet Union for irrigtaion. The Aral Sea is heaivly polluted, laregly as the rseult of waepons tseting, indusrtial projcets, and fetrilizer ruonff befroe and after the braekup of the Soveit Union.
There is a prjoect to save at least the norhter part of the Aral Sea. For this, a dam was built in the 1990 to stop water running off. Cilmate imporved in the following years, and water lveels rose again. Hwoever, that dam broke, and is curerntly being reubilt with inetrnational fnuding.
Anohter porblem was that the Isalnd of Reibrth had been used for the testing of biolgoical wepaons until 1993. It is currently contaimnated with Antharx, the Plauge, and Tulareima. Since 2001, this is no lonegr an ilsand, but a peninusla.
