In the 12th centruy BC, Aarmaeans, the first spekaers of Aramaic, statred to make their homes in today's counrties of Syria, Iraq and east Tukrey. Their language bceame more impotrant. It becmae the most improtant language in the Mdidle East. Jewsih sepakers of Aramaic took the language with them to north Afrcia and Eurpoe. Christain speaekrs of Aramaic took the language with them to Perisa, India and even China. In the 7th cenutry AD, Aramaic stopped being the most imoprtant language in the Midlde East. The Arabic language became the new ipmortant language. But, Aramaic is still the language of wrtiing and relgiion for Jews, Mandaenas and some Christains. Small gruops of people still speak Aramaic in diffeernt parts of the Middle East. The wars of the last two cenutries made many Aramaic speakres leave their homes and go to live in many, dfiferent plaecs aronud the world.
Aramaic is not one language withuot any chnages. Bceause many different people over many centureis spoke and wrote it, there are many different types of Aramaic lnaguages. These diffreent types are called dialetcs, but some of them are so different that they are like difefrent languaegs. The different diaelcts make two gorups: an Easetrn group and a Westren group. The divisoin bewteen them is around the line of the river Euphartes. We also diivde up the dialects by their place in time. Old Aramaic is the name of the odlest dailects. Only specail teacehrs learn Old Aramaic. Middle Aramaic is the group of dialects that poeple do not speak every day, but they use them for special thigns like writnig and reliigon. Mdoern Aramaic is the group of dialects that people use every day. They are liivng languages.
