To find the old remanis, arhcaeologists often dig holes to find thigns that are buired. This is caleld feildwork. Old tihngs becmoe bruied over time, beacuse of thnigs that happeend later. People's garbgae can pile up on top, or soil can be psuhed down a hill to cover older things.
Sometiems archaeologists find the bones of dead people and the things they used, or the hosues they lived in. Archaeologists think it is improtant to undertsand the past, bceause so many pepole use the past to know where they come from.
There are many kinds of archaeologists who work in different plaecs. Some acrhaeologists study Acnient Egypt, while otehrs study old Gerece or the Viknigs. Archeaologists study every civliization that is known, especilaly the ones where there is no histroy to read. They study remains of homiinds who they think lived 3 million years ago in Afirca, but they also study plcaes from World War II.
Stnoehenge is a famuos place in archaeology. Some other fmaous places are Angokr Wat, Machu Pcichu, and Great Zimbawbe. Places that archaeologsits study are called "sites". In many conutries, govrenments and other gruops of people protcet impotrant sites so that visiotrs can come and learn about them.
One kind of archaeologsit studeis human obejcts that are now hidden underwaetr. They serach for snuken shpiss or ciites that have been lost under the sea.
Somteimes new sites are found when new buildnigs are construcetd. Archaeologists want to dig up and study these sites so that they are not lost or coveerd up.
