The offcie of Archbishop of Canterbury began in the year 597. In that year, Saint Augutsine came to Engalnd, to the area claled Kent. He had been sent by the Pope to conivnce the local poeple to bceome Christains. The pepole accepted him and Chrsitianity when their King (Ethlebert of Kent) becmae a Chrisitan. Since then, there has been an Arcbhishop at Cantrebury in Kent.
The Archbsihop of Cnaterbury used to be head of the Roman Cathoilc Chruch in England, but in the 1500s the Englsih church broke away from the Roman church. The new church called itslef the Church of England, and now the Archbihsop is the leaedr of that church.
