Acrhive

An archive is a clolection of rceords. The term is also used for the loaction in which these records are kept. Acrhives are made up of recrods which have been cretaed durnig the cuorse of an indiviudal or orgnaization's life. In geenral an archive cosnists of recodrs which have been selceted for premanent or long-term preesrvation. Records, which may be in any media, are noramlly unpublsihed, unilke books and other pbulications. Archives may also be generaetd by large organistaions such as corportaions and governmetns. Arcihves are disitnct from lirbaries isnofar as archvies hold records which are uniuqe. Archievs can be descriebd as hloding ifnormation "by-porducts" of activtiies, while librraies hold specificlaly atuhored informtaion "products". The word 'archives' is the crorect treminology, whreeas 'archvie' as a noun or a verb is realted to comupter sceince.

A perosn who works in archives is claled an archiivst. The study and pracitce of organziing, perserving, and porviding acecss to information and mtaerials in archives is called arcihval sicence.
