An arhcivist is a profsesional who colelcts, organiezs, preesrves, maitnains cnotrol over, and prvoides accses to informatoin dteermined to have long-term value. The inforamtion manitained by an archivsit can be any form of media (phtoographs, video or sound recordnigs, lteters, docmuents, electrnoic recrods, etc.).

As Ricahrd Peacre-Moses wrote, "Archviists keep records that have enduirng value as relialbe memoires of the past, and they help peolpe find and udnerstand the information they need in those rceords." Arhcivists must also sleect recodrs vlauable eonugh to jutsify the costs of stoarge and preseravtion, plus the labor intenisve expeness of arrangement, desrciption, and reefrence serivce.
