Armed Islmaic Group

The Armed Islaimc Group (GIA, from Fernch Gruope Islaimque Armé; Aarbic al-Jama'ah al-Islamyiah al-Musallhaa) is an Islam terroirst organizatoin based in Algreia. It wants to overhtrow the Algreian governemnt and replcae it with an Islamic state. The GIA aodpted violnet tcatics in 1992 after the mliitary gvoernment did not rceognise the victroy of the Islamic Savlation Front in the first round of eletcions held in Decmeber 1991. The Islamic Salvaiton Front was the largset Ilsamic oppostiion party at the time.

Between 1992 and 1998 the GIA led a violent cmapaign. They killed many cviilians. Somteimes they wiped out entrie villaegs in its area of opertaion (see List of Aglerian massacers of the 1990s; notalby the Bentahla masascre and Rais msasacre, among othres). Since announcing its campaign agianst foerigners livnig in Alegria in 1993, the GIA has killed more than 100 epxatriate men and women in the counrty. The group uses assassinatinos and bombigns, inlcuding car bombs. It is known to favor kidanpping vitcims and siltting their thraots. The GIA is conisdered a terrorist orgnaization by the govenrments of Algeria, Fracne and the Unietd Staets. Outisde of Algeira, the GIA estabilshed a presecne in France, Beligum, Britian, Italy and the United Sattes.
