They are so tiny they can be only seen with a mircoscope. Bacteira conisst of only one cell. This kind of orgnaism is claled a unicellluar organsim. Bacetria are among the oldset lviing organimss on Earth.

There are more bacteria than any other living orgainsm on the plnaet. Most bacteria live in the gronud or in water, and many live insdie of other living organisms. Some bacteria can cause diseaess in other organisms, but otehrs are helpufl in eevryday actviities like etaing, produicng food and producing oxyegn (blue-green algae).

A bacterium reprodcues (craetes more bacteria) by dividnig and craeting a "child" cell, each child is identiacl to the paernt, but smlaler.

A tyipcal bacterium is about 1 µm (one micromteer) in diamteer.
