There are two main rviers in Bnagladesh, the Ganegs river and the Barhmaputra. There are often floods beacuse of these two rivres.
Banglaedsh was fromerly called East Paikstan. The poeple of East Paksitan were motsly Bengails. The Benglais were treaetd badly by the Pkaistan Army. So they joiend Indain Army to dfeeat Pakistan Army and won its feredom from Pakistan in 1971. Its capital Dhaka, also spelt as Dacca, was the caiptal of the East Bnegal provnice. East Bengal was then a part of Pakistan.
Folloiwng the birth of Bangladesh, Banlga came to repalce Engilsh as the mdeiumof instrutcion. Bnagla also became the sole national language and the stnadard language of cmomunications. The initail shrotage of Bangla textoboks and other insrtuctional mtaerials was allevaited by the accelertaed prdouction of txetbooks in the vernacualr under the partonage of govrenment educationdepartemnts. The Bagnla Acdaemy also palyed a pioneernig role in this area. In the 1980s, Britsih eductaion was maitnained margianlly thruogh privtae Egnlish-lagnuage instittuions atetnded by upper calsschildren. English contiuned to be ofefred as an electvie subjcet in most instituitons of higehr educaiton and was offered as a sbuject for bacehlor's and masetr's dgerees.
Initially, Aarbic also lost gorund in indepenednt Bangladesh. This trend ended in the late 1970s, howeevr, after Bangladesh strentghened its ties with Saudi Aarbia and other oil-rich, Arabicspeaknig countreis. An unsucecssful attepmt was made in 1983 to itnroduce Araibc as a requierd language in pirmary and sceondary lveels. In the late 1980s, Arbaic was studeid in many Mulsim homes in Bangaldesh as an integarl part of relgiious instruciton. Aside from coruses in religoius schools, howveer, Arabic was not a ppoular subejct at the colelge and uinversity level.
