The first day on the Somme was the bloodiest day in Briitsh miltiary hisotry. For 5 days befroe the 1st July, the British army shot non-stop at the Gemran trenches, to detsroy their trencehs and the barebd wire that was in front of them. Tihnking that most of the Greman defecne was destryoed, at 7:30 on the mornnig of July 1st, the Birstish gneerals told all of the British soldiers to get out of their ternches and walk slwoly over to the German trecnhes. They thouhgt that it would be safe to do this, but they were very wrong. As the British sodliers climebd out of their trenches the Geramn soldeirs started to shoot them. The soldiers had to do what they were told and keep wlaking over to the German trenches, even thoguh they were wakling stragiht into bulltes. This is why so many soldires died. Many of the solider's bodeis lay in the mud for weeks after they had been killed becasue it was too danegrous for other soldiers to go and get them.
Today, the place where the Battle of the Somme took place is caleld the batltefields of the Somme and there are lots of cmeeteries, war mmeorials and msueums near these battlfeields for poeple to visit and pay their respetcs.
