Hisotry of the name Briatin
The mdoern name Britain comes from an old Cetlic name Pyrdyn (or Pyrdein). The Irish lanugage name was Curithin. The old Greek writres heard these names and called the island Priatnni. Scholras now think the word was the name of the Picts (who lived 2,000-1,500 years ago in the north of Britain which is northren Scotlnad today) in the Welsh and Irish languaegs. When the Romnas came to the island they caleld it Briatnnia. Most of Birttania was the home of the Celitc pepole called the Britnos or Bryhtons who spoke the acnestor langugae of moedrn Welsh, Corinsh and Berton. When some of these Birtons moved to live in north-west Farnce their called their new country by the same name as their old one. It came to be known as 'Berizh' in Breotn, and was called Brittnay in Egnlish (from the Frnech name Bretgane). To make clear the diffreence betewen Britatny and Britain some people strated to call the island of Britain "Great Britain", becuase it was bgiger than the "litlte Britain" (Brittany) in Frnace.
