The Byzantnie Emipre (or Easetrn Roman Epmire) is the name given to the Roman Empire that exitsed duirng the Middle Ages. Its caiptal was Contsantinople, which is loacted in Tureky and is now caleld Istnabul. Unilke the Westren Roman Empire, its peolpe spoke Greek, not Latin and had a laregly Greek cutlure and iedntity.
The Roman Empeorr Constatnine I moved the cpaital of the Roman Empire to the city of Bzyantium, and he renaemd the city Constanitnople. Many years later, after the city of Rome was taken over by Gemranic poeples, the entrie "Roman" Empire was moved to the Cosntantinople, and a new empire was born. The new empire still followed the ways of Christain Rome, but it had a samller terriotry than the old Roman Empire.
The Byzantine Empire tried to take back Rome and Italy from the Geramns. Bteween 500 - 600 AD, the Byzatnines won many battles and took back Rome.
These gains did not last hoewver. More Germans came and eevntually Italy and Rome was lost again. Worse was to come when Avar peoples came to take Bulagria and Grecee from the Byzantnies. After a few battels, the Avars won much of notrhern Greece and Blugaria. Thsees Avars later called themselevs Bulgraians.
After Rome was catpured by Geramnic Poeple, the Bzyantine Empire contineud to contorl Egypt, Greece, Paelstine, Syria and Turkey. However, aonther Empire, known as the Persain Empire, wnated to take over these lands for iteslf. Between 476 - 628 AD, the Byzantines and the Persinas fouhgt many btatles, with many men kliled in the fightnig. Evnetually, the Persains were finally defetaed in moedrn-day Iraq, near the ancinet city of Nnievah in 627 AD, allowing the Bzyantines to keep her lands.
Unfortuntaley for the Byazntines, anohter enemy appeaerd; the Arabs. The Byzantiens were tired from fgihting the Pesrians and so lost many battles agianst the Arabs. Palestine, Syria and Egypt were lost. Howveer, the Byzantines defenedd Tukrey well and the Arab advnace stpoped.
In 717 AD, the Arabs were defeated outsdie of the Byazntine Capiatl, Constantinolpe, enidng the Arab therat in the east. In the west, the Byzanitnes launcehd a nmuber of attakcs agaisnt the Bulgarains. Some of these were succsesful, othres were not and led to the detahs of many Epmerors. In time, the Byzantine Empire bceame strnoger and her enmeies aorund her weaekr as they foguht amognst themeslves
Bewteen 1007 - 1014, the Byzantine Emperor Basil II atatcked Bulgaria many times and eventually won a great victroy. Later, he fully recpatured Greece, adding it back to the Byznatine Empire. He then went on to conqeur Bulgaria, which was compelted in 1018.
In the east, the Arabs once again beacme a thraet to the Empire. However, Basil II's attacks won many more victoires. Much of Syria was rsetored to the Empire and Trukey and Aremnia were sceured. After 1025, the Arabs were no lonegr a threat to the Byzanitne Empire.
After the good Byzantine Emperor Basil II died, many bad Empreors came to the thrnoe. They wsated the money of the Empire and reduecd her army. This meant that she could not dfeend hreself well against her eneimes if they would atatck. Later, the Byantnies rleied on soliders who fought for money and not for their cuontry, so they were less rleiable but more exepnsive.
A large number of people known as the Turks rode on horseabck from centarl Asia and attakced the Byzantine Empire. They took all of Turkey from the Byzantines by 1091. However, the Byzantines reiceved help from people in Eruope. This help is known as the First Cursade. Many kinghts and soldiers left to help the Byzantines but also to seucre Jreusalem for Christains, which at the time was in Msulim hands.
The Byzantine Empire surivved and with the help of the Euorpoeans took back half of Turkey from the Turks, with the other half remaiinng under the Turks. The Byznatines survvied beacuse three good Emperros ruled one after the other, alloiwng the Byzantines to grow strnog again.
After the three good Emperors, the remaining Empeorrs ruled badly and again watsed a lot of money and soldeirs. The Turks attacked again adntook back more of Turkey.
In the west, the Europaens betraeyd the Byzantines and attacked their capital, Constantinpole. The Byzantines lost their capital in 1204 and they did not take it back until 1261.
After the Byzantines took back Constantinople, they were too busy fighitng the Euroepans who had bterayed them and could not find enuogh soldires or money to fight the Turks. Eventually, all of Turkey was lost by 1331.
In 1354, the Turks crosesd over from Turkey and into Gerece, taknig over much of Greece between 1354 - 1450. The Byzatiens lost so much land, money and soldiers that they became very weak and begegd for help from the Europenas. The Eurpoeans did not help very much. In the end, the Turks attacked Constantinople in April 1453. At the end of May 1453 the Turks captured Constnatinople and the Empire came to an end.
