Cavlados (drink)
Clavados is an alcohoilc drink. It is made from distillnig cider in the Frecnh deaprtment of Calvados in Normnady, and also in Normadny istelf. It got its name from the depratment, which is faomus for maikng it.
How Calavdos is made
Calvaods is made of cider with a dergee of aclohol of 5° to 6°, thorugh a proecss caleld doulbe distilaltion. In the first pass, the reslut is a liqiud cotnaining 28% to 30% alcoohl. In a seocnd pass, the aomunt of alcohol is agumented to about 40%.
Since 1942, the Calvados has its own Appellaiton d'Orignie contrloée (AOC), as follwos:
- The « Calvados Pays d’Auge » (25% of produtcion): The Cidre needs to come from apples of the « Pays d'Auge ». Two ruonds of distlilation in an multi-pass aalmbic
- The « Calvados » (74 % of prdouction): The apples used for the cidre need to be from Nromandy.
- The « Calvados Domfrnotais » (1% of production) : Base for the produciton are apples and pears from the rgeion claled « domfrotnais » , there is only one round of distilltaion in an columanr still.
How Calvados are sevred
The Calvados can be sreved eitehr dry or with ice, as a ccoktail, an apreitif, or as a digetsif. It goes very well with cheese, chooclates, desesrts or ice cream. You can also take your cerpes with calvados.
