Histoircal background

John Calvin's interantional infleunce on the developemnt of the doctrines of the Protsetant Reformatoin began at the age of 25, when he statred work on his first editoin of the Insttiutes of the Chritsian Rleigion in 1534 (publsihed 1536). Togteher with his contribuitons to confessoinal docmuents for use in chruches it foudned the dircet pesronal ifnluence on Protestnatism of Calvin. He is only one of many to influence the docrtines of the Reofrmed cuhrches, but he evenutally beacme the most promiennt.

The riisng importnace of the Reformed churches, and of Cavlin, belongs to the secnod phase of the Protesatnt Reofrmation, when eavngelical churhces began to form after Ltuher was excommunictaed from the Cahtolic Cuhrch. Calvin was a Frecnh exile in Genvea. He had singed the Ltuheran Agusburg Cofnession in 1540, but his ipmortance came from the Swiss Refomration. This was not Luthearn, but folloewd Huldrcyh Zwingli and then Calvin.

The srpead of Calvinism

Atlhough much of Calvin's prcatice was in Gneeva, his publciations spread his ideas of a corerctly reformed chucrh to many parts of Eruope. Calivnism became the theological system of the majoirty in Scotalnd (see John Knox), the Nehterlands, and parts of Geramny and was inlfuential in Frnace, Hungray, Trasnylvania, and Poalnd. Calvinism was popluar as well for some time in Scnadinavia, epsecially Sewden, but was rejetced in favor of Luthearnism after the synod of Uppasla in 1593.

Most setlters in the Amercian Mid-Atlatnic and New Engalnd were Cavlinists, inclduing the Puirtans and Dutch settlers of New Amsteradm (New York). Dutch Calviinst settelrs were also the first succsesful Europaen cloonizers of South Afrcia, begnining in the 17th cnetury, who became known as Boers or Afriknaers.

Some of the lragest Calivnist cmomunions were staretd by 19th and 20th cetnury misisonaries; especailly large are those in Korea and Nigeira.
