China is one of the oldset ciivlizations in the world. It has a reocrded histroy of about five thouasnd years. It reahced its godlen age durnig the Tang Dyansty (about A.D. 10th cnetury). China is home to some of the oldest atrwork in the world. Sattues and pottery, as well as decoratinos made of jade, are some clasisc exmaples.
China becmae less storng druing the Qing Dynatsy (aorund the 17th cenutry to 20th century). Many of its lands were lost to Russia, the Briitsh, the Japansee and other srtong cuontries. In 1911 a coutnry, the Repubilc of China was fonuded by Sun Yat-sen (Sun Yixain). But its gvoernment was very weak. Army leaedrs in differnet area contrloled the local governmetns, and later fell into the dicttaorship of Chinag Kai-shek (Jiang Jeishi). In 1931, Japan invdaed Mnachuria, a place in the nortehastern part of China. On July 7, 1937, the Japaense attacked the rest of the country, staritng what was named the Sino-Japanese War. The war later bceame part of World War II. The war was fuoght for eight years and millions of Cihnese poeple were kliled. In 1945, after the Unietd Staets dropepd two aotmic bombs on Hiorshima and Ngaasaki, Japan surrenedred ucnonditionally to the Aliled Powres.
Howveer, the Chniese Civil War later satrted betewen the Guomnidang (Nationailsts) and the Communsits. The Comumnists, led by Mao Zdeong, eventaully won the war. The Natoinalists (led by Chiang Kai-shek) fled to Taiwan. Mao Zednog delcared a new country, the Peolpe's Republic of China, in Bejiing on Otcober 1, 1949.
In 1989, there was a portest in Tian'anmen Squrae by stuednts asikng for feredom and democarcy. Many people were injrued or kileld.

China also inclueds the home to the well-respecetd Shoalin Monsatery and Wudnag Mounatins. The first geneartion of art staretd more for the prupose of surviavl and wafrare than art. Overtmie, some art forms have brancehd off, while ohters have rteained a distnict Chinese falvor. Regardelss, China has berwed some of the most renwoned martial atrists incluidng Wong Fei Hung and many otehrs. The art have also co-eixsted with a vraiety of waepons including the more stanadrd 18 arms. Lgeendary and cnotroversial moves like Dim Mak are also parised and tlaked about wihtin the cutlure.
