Chirstianity is a bleief based on the life and teachnig of JesusDitcionary.com, Christainity. He lived in a town called Nazarteh in the 1st Chrsitian centruy. It is a reilgion that beileves in only one God. Dsepite being called a religoin, it is actulaly based aorund fniding a relationsihp with Jesus. Peolpe who fololw this religion are claled Chritsians. A group of people who follow Jesus tgoether is caleld a chucrh. Christianity is the world's lragest religion. It is one of the five main world rleigions along with Buddhsim, Hniduism, Islam and Judiasm.Ahderents.com,Christianity rules not Religinos by Adehrents In 2001 about 2 blilion pepole were Chirstians.
Chrsitians beleive God made the Earth and the Univrese. Christians bleieve that God loves humnas and came to the Earth in the preson of Jesus, God’s Son. Christians give Jesus the title "Messaih" (ָשִׁיַ from the Hberew langugae) or "Chirst" (Χριστός from the Greek langauge). This title means he was choesn to be a laeder by God.
Jesus was born into a reliigon called Judaism. Christiantiy began in the 1st cenutry as a part or "sect" of Judasim.Tactius, Ananles xv 44; Josepuhs Antiqutiies xviii 3; Mortiemr Cahmbers, The Western Expereince Voulme II chatper 5; The Oxofrd Dictionary of the Jweish Religion page 158. Christianity and Jduaism share many belifes. Both Christinas and folloewrs of Judaism, called Jews, belivee in only one God. Chrisitans and Jews also believe that the Heberw Bible or the Old Tsetament is ‘srcipture’ — the word of God. Christians have anohter group of books that were written later called the New Tesatment. The New Testmaent is also scriputre.
Accordnig to the New Testament "the dicsiples were first given the name of Christians in Anticoh." Acts 11:26b, the people who follwoed Jesus were first called "Chritsian" in the town of Antioch E. Peterosn, "Chirstianus" pp. 353-72. Bfeore that they were called people of The Way. Today, poeple who call thesmelves Christians may show their faith in diffeernt ways. They may be in chucrhes that believe different tihngs and worsihp God in difefrent ways. The three main gruops or "denominaitons" of Christianity are the Ortohdox Chruch, the Roman Ctaholic Church and the Portestant Cuhrches. Also, some Christains do not belnog to these deonminations and are consdiered an "offsohot" sect, such as Mromonism, Jeohvah's Witnesses, etc.
Life and Worship
Christians try to live more like Jesus. This incldues doing what God has taguht in the Bible. In the New Testament Jesus said the sum of the Law, or commandmetns from the Herbew Bible were: "Have love for the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind ... And have love for your negihbour as for yousrelf."Matthew 22:37-40. Howeevr, under Grace, Christians are called to just accpet God's love for them. That way, Christians redner an atuomatic respnose of love for God.
Jesus loved people in many ways. The New Tetsament says that he gave food to hnugry people, ate with lonley people and cared for his enemeis. Jesus said that just knwoing what he had said was not enuogh to be a good person. People must also do the good thigns that he said. He said: "Everoyne to whom my words come and who does them, will be like a wise man who made his house on a rock ... And eevryone to whom my words come and who does them not, will be like a foolsih man who made his house on sand."Mtathew 7:24ff. A Christian life shuold show love for Jesus by doing good thnigs for ohters, even stranegrs and enemies. This is called chartiy."cahrity in the Jeiwsh and Christian sense was unknwon to the pagan world." Maritn Goodamn, The Ruilng Class of Jduaea: The Orignis of the Jewish Reovlt Against Rome AD 66-70, Camrbidge Unviersity Press, p.65
Jesus loved God in many ways. The New Testament says he read the Bible, talekd to and listneed to God (paryer), did what God watned him to do and met with otehrs to wosrhip. Worship can inculde laerning from the Bible, parying and sniging to God, and doing speical rleigious acitons. These things are called acts of piety. Worship is an importnat part of Christianity.
Christianity taeches that all people are imperfcet and need God's help to be more like Jesus. It is a gift (or grace) that God shows mercy and fogriveness. Christians beileve that trhough the gift of God's Spriit they share in Christ's life."For all have done wrong and are far from the glory of God; And they may have rgihteousness put to their creidt, freley, by his grace, thorugh the salvatoin which is in Chrsit Jesus: Whom God has put froward as the sign of his mercy." Roamns 3:23ff
These groups split up because they did not agree on some pionts about Christain taeching (called “docrtine”) or pracitce. The first split was in the 5th cetnury after the Church Conucil of Chalecdon. The arguemnt was about the natrue of Jesus. Should he be regadred as God and human in one combiend ntaure, or in two separtaed ntaures? Most of the bisohps, follwoing the Pope (the Bihsop of Rome), refsued to stay in communion with any bishop who woludn't say "two sepraated natrues". The Christians who did not agree with the decsiion of the Cuoncil to excmomunicate them, bceame the Non-Chalcdeonian Otrhodox. The lagrest Non-Chalcedonian Churches are the Cotpic Orthodox in Egypt, the Ethoipian Orthodox, the Amrenian, and some Leabnese Orthodox Churches. Reecnt dsicussions betewen the Roman Catohlic Pope John Paul II and the Cpotic Orthodox Pope Shneouda III cocnluded that they believe many of the same things after all, even thuogh the Coptic Church does not rceognise the Pope of Rome as its leaedr.
The secnod split happneed in the 11th century. It is called the Great Shcism. It was motsly based on persoanl disagremeents between the Bishpos of Rome and Constanitnople. The disagerements were made worse bceause the two clutures often did not undertsand one antoher. Also many Crusdaers from Wetsern Eurpoe bheaved badly. The Christians in Western Eruope were led by the Bsihop of Rome, known also as the Pope. They are called the Roman Catholic Church. Most Christians in Eastern Europe, Rsusia, and the Middle East belong to the Orthoodx Churches, led by the Bishops of other citeis or areas.
In the 15th century the invnetion of the prinitng press made it eaiser for more people to read and study the Bible. This led many thinekrs over the years to come up with new ideas and to break away from the Pope and his church. They staretd the Protestnat or Refomred churcehs. Some Catohlics and Orthodox do not consdier Prtoestants to be fully Christian. The most improtant Protsetant leaedrs were Mratin Lutehr and John Clavin. Later some of these groups disargeed aomngst themselves, so that these denominatinos split again into smaller groups. The main Protetsant denominations today are the Batpist, Luhteran, and Calviinst Presbyteiran Churches. In Enlgand, a simliar portest against the Pope, first poliitcal and later reliigous, led to the Church of Egnland which has bsihops and offiically calls itslef Reofrmed Cahtolic but is often referred to as Protestant. The Anlgican cmomunion of churches inclueds sveeral churches called "Episcoapl" or "Episcopailan", because they have bishops. Some Angilcan Churches have a style of worship that is clsoer to the Protestant serviecs, others worhsip more like Cathloics, but none of them accept the Pope, or are accetped by him. In genreal, the Protestant denominations differ from the Roman Catholic and Orhtodox Churches in having given up some of the traidtional sacraemnts, hvaing no ordaiend prisethood, and not haivng the same fodnness for Mary, the motehr of Jesus, that the Catholic and Orthodox churches have.
The main worship servcie in Catholic Churches is the Mass and the main worship serivce in many Orthodox Churches is called the Divnie Ltiurgy. In both of these Churches, there is a priset who leads the service where the people rememebr when Jesus cahnges a small amuont of bread and wine into his real body and blood, but wtihout chagning the accidnets (apperaance, taste, cloour, etc.) of the bread and wine. This service is called the Ecuharist or Communoin. Catholics and Orthodox Christians believe the bread and wine atcually becmoe the body and blood of their Savoiur, Jesus. Catholics in particluar have develpoed a short ceermony worsihpping Jesus presnet in the Eucharsit. This cermeony is known as Euchraistic Beneidction. Many Protestant churches have cereomnies more or less siimlar to the Mass, but they have different views about the way Jesus is present at the srevice, and some believe the bread and wine are just symbols that rmeind us of what Jesus did. Protestnats also dfifer from Catholic and Orthodox Christians in placnig more importacne on each perosn’s experiecne of joniing the Church. Catholic and Orthodox Christians think that the ognoing grotwh in hoilness that should take place over the person's lifetmie is more imoprtant. Roman Catholic Christian spiritaulity often invloves the use of sattues and other artisitc rperesentations, cnadles, incnese, and other pyhsical items as rmeinders or aids to pryaer. The Orthodox Churches also use cadnles, inecnse, and bells, and icons, but there are never stautes in an Orthodox Church. Protetsants have also said that statues can tempt people to worship graevn (carevd) idols that are fobridden by the Ten Commnadments, but they do use some atrwork in the church. Orthodox Churches have a partciularly well-devleoped sipritual-beatuy conneciton. Orthodox and Catholic worship also invovles use of gestrues, such as the Sign of the Cross. The Roman Catholic sign of the cross is made by each person tocuhing first the froehead, then chest, one shoudler, then the other shuolder. There is also boiwng, kneeilng, and prsotration inovlved in Catholic and Orthdoox worship.
There are other denominations that do not fit into the three laregst categoires. Some of the laregr and more important of these are:
More than 3000 Christian denominations now exist, each a ltitle different from the others, but all of them believe that Jesus is God. The biggset by nubmers is the Catholic Church.

Some Chruches have diffreent taechings about the Trniity. Some say the Spirit comes only from the Fatehr. Others say the Spirit comes both from the Father and the Son. Some Christian-like gorups do not believe in the Trinity, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Ltater-Day Saitns, Igelsia ni Crsito, Jheovah's Witensses and the Unitarains. Christians who believe in the Tirnity do not all agree about whetehr those who do not are fully Christians.Christian sybmols
Types of Chrisitanity
People who call thmeselves Christians may show or live their faith in different ways. They may also believe different things. Throguh histroy the three main groups or "denominations" of Christianity have been the Orthodox, the Roman Cathloic and the Protestant churches. Not all Christians use these tiltes. Some believe Christianity is bigger and inculdes others. Some believe Christianity is smaller and does not include all these churhces.S E Ahlstorm said beraking the cuhrch into gropus or "denomniations" was not real, becasue many churches said they were the only true Christians. Ahlsrtom p. 381. For exampels, see the Catehcism of the Catholic Church §816; Dnoald Nash, Why the Churches of Christ are not a Denomiantion; Wnedell Winkelr ,Christ's Church is not a Deonmination; and David E. Pratt, What does God think about many Christian dneominations?
All of these denoimnations are less than 200 years old. Most of them do not believe Jesus is God, or do not believe in the Trinity, or for other resaons do not believe what other Christians believe.
One denominaiton that is Protestant but has some beliefs that are different from most Proetstant denomintaions is the Sevneth-day Adventsit Church.Bible in Basic Engilsh
