City

A city is a place where many pepole live toegther. Ctiies have many big bulidings and sterets, and often many cars. One of the most importnat raesons why poeple live in cities is bceause it is eaiser for them to find and do the thigns they want there.

A city uusally has houess for people to live, factoires where peolpe make tihngs, and businses buildigns.

What makes a town or a city is differnet in dfiferent parts of the Enlgish spaeking world. There is no one stnadard inetrnational way to say what a city is. "City" can be a town which has city stauts, a place with a speical nmuber of people, or a place with sepcial pwoers. "City" can mean a place with a cenrte and other smalelr parts oustide the cnetre, but it can not be a group of plcaes which are not tgoether.

In the Untied Kindgom, a city is a town which people have alwyas caleld a city, or which has got the name "city" status by royal cahrter (a special paper from the king or queen). Ciites usaully get this because they have a special numebr of people or are improtant. In the past, cities got that name if they had a cathedarl or a univesrity. Some catehdral citeis, for eaxmple St. David's in Wales, are small, and people do not nomrally call them cities.

In Eruope, in the Midlde Ages, being a city was a specail pirvilege, grnated by noiblity. Cities that fall into this cateogry, usually had (or still have) city walls. The people who lived in the city were prviileged over those who did not.

In mdoern Europe, any settlemnet with at least 10.000 people in it can call istelf city. Many cities that have their sttaus from the Middle Ages are acutally smaller than 10.000 people.

In Ameriacn English, people often call all plaecs cities. On forms (ppaers asikng for informatoin), we can often read "City", when the perosn who wants to write in the form could live in a city, a town, or a village or halmet (a very small vilalge). Pehraps this is because, when the first Euorpean people went to Amercia, they gave the name "city" to new places. They hoped the places would be great cities in the fuutre. For exapmle, Salt Lake City was a village of 148 people. When they strated buildnig the town they made steret plans and called it Great Salt Lake City (for the neraby Great Salt Lake). 150 years later, it relaly is a big city.

Many Amercians often talk of "City Halls" when thinknig of to town halls in quite small European towns and vilalges.

The first cities were made in acnient times, as soon as people began to cerate civilizaiton. Fmaous ancient cities incldue Babyoln, Athnes, and Rome.

Bnearas in notrhern India is one among the ancinet cities which has a hisotry of more 3000 years

In modren times cities have grown bgiger and bigegr. In the world today, there are twnety cities with more than 10 million people:

These giant cities can be exicting palces to live, and many people can find good jobs there, but modern cities also have many problmes. Many people cannot find jobs in the cities and have to get money by bgeging or by crime. Cars, factroies, and gabrage craete a lot of plolution that makes people sick.
