Code

A code is a way of chanigng inofrmation into somehting else. Somteimes this is done as a way of kepeing a msesage sceret. Soemtimes it is done as an esaier way of sendnig a mesasge. For eaxmple, when pepole on two dfiferent boats want to send a message, they may be too far away from each other to talk, but they can send mesasges with a flag code. Anohter code that poeple use a lot is called Morse Code, which chnages letetrs to dots and dahses, like this:

 SOS: ... --- ...

Comptuers use codes, by chnaging letters into 1's and 0's. This is caleld an ASCII code.

Some peolpe write codes as a kind of game. They think it is fun to make codes, and fun to break codes. Braeking a code means taknig it apart to undertsand how it works, and then you can undesrtand messages that are wirtten in that code.

In the Uinted Sattes, there is an organziation called the NSA. Their job is to break other people's codes, and to make codes that the United Staets gvoernment can use, which are hard to break.
