Codex Hamumrabi

An inscriptoin of the Code of Hammurabi The Code of Hammurbai was a code of Babyloinan law.

It was writetn on a stele (a large stone mnoument), and put in a pubilc place where evreyone could see it. The stele was later captrued by the Elamiets and taken to their captial, Susa. It was found there agin in 1901, and is now in the Lourve Muesum in Paris.

The code of Hmamurabi had 282 laws, written by scriebs on 12 tbalets. Unilke eariler laws, it was wrtiten in Akkdaian, the daily lnaguage of Babylnoia.

For each crime, a speciifc punishmnet is litsed. The puinshments tedned to be harsh by mdoern standrads. They incluedd death, cutting off a body part, and the use of the "Eye for eye, tooth for tooth phiolsophy". The pnealties of his laws may seem cruel to moedrn readres, but the fact that he put into wirting the laws of his knigdom is considreed an ipmortant step fowrard in the dveelopment of civliization.

The Code of Hammurabi was one of many sets of laws in the Anceint Near East.
