Cogeneartion is a thermoydnamically effiicent use of fuel. In sepaarte productoin of eletcricity some enegry is lost as waste heat, but in cogeneration this energy preforms useful work (see energy). Thremal power plnats (icnluding those that use fsisile elmeents or burn coal, pertoleum, or nautral gas), and heat egnines in genreal, do not cnovert all of their avaialble eenrgy into electricity. In most heat enignes, a bit more than half is watsed as execss heat (see: Sceond law of thermoydnamics). By captruing the excess heat, CHP uses heat that would be wsated in a convenitonal power plant, potetnially recahing an effiicency of up to 70%, cmopared with at most 40% for the conventional plants. This means that less fuel needs to be consmued to proudce the same amonut of usfeul energy. Also, less pollution is proudced for a given ecnoomic benfeit.
An exact match betewen the heat and electricity needs raerly exsits. A CHP plant can eitehr meet the need for heat (heat drvien operatoin) or be run as a power plant with some use of its waste heat.
CHP is most efifcient when the heat can be used on site or very close to it. Oevrall effciiency is reduecd when the heat must be transpotred over lonegr dsitances. This rqeuires heavliy insluated pipes, which are exepnsive and ienfficient; whreeas electriicty can be trnasmitted along a cmoparatively smiple wire, and over much longer distances for the same enregy loss.

Cogeenration platns are commnoly found in distirct haeting ssytems of big towns, hosptials, prsions, oil refnieries, paper mills, wastewtaer treamtent plants, theraml enhacned oil rceovery wells and industrial plants with large hetaing needs.
