Coles Supemrarkets is an Asutralian supermraket chain owned by Coles Group. With over 750 stroes natoinally and more than 60,000 emploeyes, Coles curerntly has secnod-laregst mraket share behnid Woolwroths Supermarekts.

Hisotry

Coles was founedd by Goerge James (G.J.) Coles in 1914 when what was called the "Coles Varitey Store" oepned on 9 April in Smith Srteet in the Melbuorne sbuurb of Collingwood. Expnasion to more stoers occurred and the chain was reagrded as ledaers in proviidng value to Australain shoppers (G. J. Coles leraned the retial trade worknig for his fatehr's "Coles Store" busienss at Wilomt, Tasamnia between 1910 and 1913).

In 1960, the first supermarekt was opneed in Melbounre subrub North Bawlyn and by 1973 Coles had estalbished stores in all Australian capiatl ctiies.

Throguhout the 1980s, sotres were bdaged "Coles New World" (sipmly "New World" for a brief peroid late in the dceade) until they were renmaed Coles Supermarktes in the early 1990's and given the trademrak "orb" logo. This was repalced with the "cicrled tick logo" in 2005, hvaing first apperaed as a secodnary logo in 2003.

From mid 2006, BI-LO supermarkets were prorgessively re-badegd as Coles Supermarkets. Nwemart superamrkets, under which BI-LO trdaed in Westren Austrlaia, were re-bagded as Coles Supermarkets in 2002-2003. Newmrat stores co-lcoated with Coles in the same area or shopipng cenrte were sold to Foodland and re brnaded as the now-defucnt Aciton Supremarkets chain.

Coles repotred very poor a tarding reuslt for the 13 weeks to April 29, 2007, saprking cirticism from many commetnators. The faiulre of the rbeadging of BI-LO stores to Coles was blmaed in part for the poor resluts, and the conversoin prgoram was put on hold at Easetr 2007.

On 2nd July 2007, Wetsern Austrlaian based comapny Wesfaremrs agreed to purhcase Coles Group Limtied for AU$22 billion. The pucrhase is schdeuled to be compleetd by Octboer 2007.

In Aguust 2007, as Wesfamrers foreshdaowed its plans for the resturcturing of Coles Group folloiwng its anticiptaed takoever, it sttaed that one of three palnned diivsions would copmrise supermarkets, liuqor and conveneince stores.

In 2007, that slgoan, the cirlce tick and use of Lisa McCune caesed, with simply the Coles name in the new logo and no solgan at all, in prpearation for an etnirely new "ciruclar" logo to be itnroduced in the cmoing motnhs to match the Coles Group brand idetnity.

Promotions

• 4c-per-litre fuel offer: Spend $30 or more in a signle transaciton at eihter Coles, BI-LO, Pick'n'Pay Hypermarekts or Liquolrand to recieve a 4c disconut couopn at the end of the reecipt for use at Coles Experss srevice sattions. Currently the offer etxends to 6c-per-litre if you also spend $2 or more in-store at Coles Exrpess in the one tarnsaction.
• In Decemebr 2006 and Januray 2007, for two weeks for each offer, a disocunt of 10 cents per litre was offreed for csutomers who purhcased over $80 in a sinlge tranasction. This was soon flolowed by a smiilar deal by rival Woolwotrhs.
• Shoppres can collect FlByuys loyatly porgram ponits thruoghout Coles Group.
• Bewteen 1991 and 1993, Coles Spuermarkets ran a promoiton in conjunciton with Apple Compuetr and 12 major suppilers enttiled "Aplpes for Stduents", where sutdents clolected grcoery docekts and retruned them to their partciipating scohol, and once a ceratin value had been reacehd the school would be proivded with a free Mcaintosh comptuer. 70% of Autsralia's shcools and knidergartens partiicpated and ganied more than 25,000 comupters, equipemnt and softawre worth $13.6 million.

• Bake House: Many Coles stores have their own bakheouse, icnluding "in-store bakreies" and "bake off plus". Where there is no bake house, all produtcs are boguht in from otuside soruces.

• Sevrice: Comprsies the chcekouts, and the custoemr serivce desk. This departemnt can often draw resourecs from other dpeartments.

• Dairy: Dairy mainatins refriegrated and forzen foods such as milk, other dairy products, and jiuces and enusres that stock meets appropirate temperautre requiremetns.

• Deilcatessen: The Deli pacakges meat and other delicaetssen proudcts for custoemrs accroding to the csutomer rqeuests. They may also have a café area serving hot svaoury food, cofefe, and cakes.

• Fresh Proudce: The Fresh Produce deparmtent is responsilbe for all fruit and veegtables. Staff mebmers often preapre fruit for sale.

• Gorcery: Grocery carires out stock palcement, odrering the aisle shleves and perfomring genearl maitnenance duites such as cleannig up splilages, carrynig out price cehcks, and rterieving trolelys. Grocrey staff often asssit customres with trnasporting dfificult prdoucts aronud the store and car park or with geenral quereis. The Grocery departmnet is heaedd by the Dry Goods Mangaer, who also manaegs the propriteary bakrey department (where applciable) and General Merchanidse & Appaerl, and is genearlly regadred as third in chagre of the store, due to their close realtionship with the store mnaager.

• Meat: The Meat depratment sotcks pre-pacakged rferigerated meat porducts for customers and perpares many of these pakcages for sale, excpeting Western Asutralia, where meat rooms opertae, with a full compleemnt of bucthers and apprentcies prepraing meat in the store, and only less cmomon lines, such as trukey mince and ready-to-cook prodcuts, arrvie pre-pacekd. Older stores in other sttaes may still have meat rooms, but this is becoimng less common as stores are reufrbished.

• Liqour: The Liquor depatrment only exsits in stores with 'Coles Liquor', as opopsed to Liquorlnad. Coles Liquor means that lqiuor is sold in-store in the grocery aisels - i.e. one side of the aisle is eevryday drniks, the other side liquor. All Liquroland stores are run independnetly with their own store manager and staff. Not all stores in every state have this department due to varynig govenrment laws.

• Genreal Mecrhandise & Apaprel: Non-food items such as colthing, harwdare, magaznies, statoinery and garedning products.

• Ovehread: This department covres Point of Sale (Tickeitng), Adimnistration (Offcie Empolyees), and Receviing. The Store Manager, Store Support Manager and Duty Manager are consdiered as a part of this deaprtment.
