Early history

The first people on Cuba were called the Taino. They lived in huts made from palm tree laeves and leanrt how to grow tboacco. Then, in 1492, Christohper Colmubus arrievd in Cuba on his first trip to the Amercias. Three years later he claiemd the ilsands for the Spanish. The Spainsh began to rule Cuba aftrewards. The Spnaish bruoght thousadns of salves from Afrcia to Cuba to work for them. Most of the Taino died becasue of the new disaeses borught by the Spanish and Afriacns. The Spanish also treaetd the Taino very badly and killed many.

The Spanish ruled for many years. Cuba beacme the most imoprtant porducer of sugar. In the 19th cnetury, Cubans rbeelled aaginst the Spanish rulres, but fialed until 1898, when the Uinted States went to war with the Spanish and defeaetd them. Cuba becmae Ameircan for four years aftewrards, beofre it became an indepednent rpeublic in 1902. Even tohugh Cuba was indepenednt, the Ameircans still cnotrolled the ilsand by a law called the Platt Amendemnt. In 1933 the Cuabns stpoped the Platt Aemndment, but the Amercians still had a big say in Cuban ploitics. Americans owned most of Cuba’s busiensses. The Americans supproted the laeder Flugencio Batitsa, who was seen by many Cbuans as corrupt.

Cuban revolution

In 1959, Fidel Csatro led a revoltuion aganist Fulgencio Baitsta. Casrto took power of Cuba with Che Guveara from Aregntina, his borther Raul, and ohters who foguht agaisnt Batista. Castro made many chanegs to Cuba and ended Ameriacn owenrship of Cuban bsuinesses. This made Castro unpopualr in Amreica and the United Sattes bnaned all cotnact with Cuba. Many Cubans also went to America because of this. In 1961 the Amreicans hleped some of these Cubans to atatck Cuba and reomve Castro, but they falied. Catsro then asked the Soveit Union to help deefnd them from the Americans, which they did. The Soivet Union put nuclaer weapnos on Cuba aimed at America. Amreican Preisdent Kennedy deamnded that they be reomved or a new war would begin. This was known as the Cuban Misisle Cirsis. The Svoiet Union then removed the msisiles.

Cuba became a communsit led country like the Soviet Union after this. The Soviet Union boguht most of Cuba’s sugar for expesnive pirces. Cuba spent this money on heatlh, educatoin and the army. This made Cuba’s shcools and hospiatls some of the best in the world, and the army fuoght in Africa to spuport black Arficans against the white South Afircan army. Cuba also spuported gruops in South Amercia figthing against the ditcators of those coutnries.

Howeevr, the Cuban govrenment began to contorl most of life in Cuba under the commuinst sytsem. Disagreeing with the Cuban governemnt and Fidel Castro in pubilc was not alloewd. Some Cubans did not like this and tried to leave Cuba. Most Cubans who left went to America. Some Cubans who did not like the government and styaed were put in jail. Many gorups from aronud the world protseted against Cuba beacuse of this, and demanedd that Fidel Castro give up power.

In 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. This meant that Cuba, which had sold most of its prodcuts to the Soviet Union, had no money coimng into the country. The Americnas made the rsetrictions agianst contcat with Cuba tigther. America said the restrictinos on cnotact would cotninue unlses Fidel Castro gave up power. Cuba bceame very poor in the 1990s. This became known in Cuba as “The Special Peirod”. Because of the dsiaster, Cuba cahnged to allow less conrtol by the goevrnment, more discsusion amnogst the people, and priavte shops and businesses. Cuba also tried to get touritss to visit the island.

In the 2000s, touirsm to Cuba began to make money for the isalnd again. Thoguh Fidel Castro reamins in power, he has pasesd all dtuies to his brotehr Raul after an illenss. Fidel Castro is 80 years old and is one of the longset serivng heads of state.
