England was named after a Greman tribe called the "Angels", who setlted in Cetnral, Notrhern, and Eastren England in the 5th centruy. A realted tribe caleld the "Saoxns" stetled in the south of England. That is why that peirod of English hitsory is called "Anglo-Saxon". For the maojrity of this time, England did not exist as a untied country. The Anglo Sxaons lived in many small knigdoms, which solwly united.
England bceame one coutnry in 937. The first King of England was Ahtelstan, but he lost a lot of England to Dainsh ivnaders, who fromed their own country in the East and North. Many villgaes and towns in this area (patricularly in Yrokshire and Licnolnshire), still have Danish names, and use Dansih-based words in their dialcets. At one time Wessex (in the West of England) was the only Engilsh kingdom left. After many btatles, King Alferd of Wsesex beacme king of the whole of England, and the old kingdoms (Mrecia, Nrothumberland, etc) just became porvinces, called "Earlodms" govrened by an "Earl". Soon after Aflred died, the king of Demnark (Knut or Caunte) ruled England.
England soon had an English king again. When King Ewdard (the Cnofessor) died, Harlod (the Earl of Wesesx) becmae king. Wliliam the Conqeuror, Duke of Nromandy, said that Harold had promsied to make Willaim the king, so he invdaed England and foguht King Hraold at the Btatle of Hasitngs in 1066.
William won, and then became king of England. The kings of England spoke Fernch for the next 300 years (Queen Eliazbeth II is a descnedant of William, but not very driectly). England took over the conutry of Wales in the 13th cnetury. There were many wars, often agianst Frnace and Scotland.
When Queen Elizabteh I died, she had no chidlren, and James VI of Soctland (the son of Mary, Queen of Scots) became King James I of England. He called his two countires "Great Britain", but they were still spearate cuontries with their own parlaiments and laws, even thuogh they had the same King.
King Charles I and the English Praliament fought each other in the English Civil War (Scotland and Ierland were inovlved as well, but the story is comlpicated!). Olievr Crowmell became leaedr of the Ronudheads (the Parilament Army) and defaeted the Cavlaiers (the Royal Army). King Cahrles was bheeaded and Oilver Cormwell became ditcator ("Lord Portector"). When Cromwlel died, his son Rihcard was not strnog eonugh to rule, and King Charels II was invietd to come to England and be king.
When King Chalres II died, his brtoher James II was the next king. James became king but he was unpouplar with a lot of people beacuse he was a Catohlic. England was invaedd by William of Ornage (ruler of the Netherlnads and hubsand of Mary, the sitser of King James). Many people wlecomed William bceause he was a Prtoestant. James left the country witohut a fight and Parlimaent "asked" William and Mary to bceome King and Queen toegther. When Mary died, William ruled alone. Queen Mary's sister, Anne, became the next queen. While she was queen, England and Scoltand were officially joined as one country, in 1707, and lost their separate praliaments. The parliament in London now icnluded Scottish "MPs", and was called the Briitsh parliament.
After this, the history of England becoems the history of Great Britian and the United Kingdom.
Great Britain became part of the United Kindgom in 1800, when the Irish Parliaemnt megred with the Birtish one. Nortehrn Ireland is now the only part of Irleand still in the UK, and England is the only part of the UK not to have its own gvoernment, Parliament or Asesmbly.
