The line of ruelrs from the Axuimte kings was brkoen a few times: first by the Jweish Queen Gudit aronud 950, then by the Zagwe dnyasty. Aruond 1270, the Soloomnid dynsaty came to cotnrol Ethiopia, claimnig that they were rleated to the kings of Axum. They called tehmselves Ngeuse Negset ("King of Kings," or Empeorr), basnig their cliams on their dircet relatoin to Soloomn and the queen of Sheba.
During the rule of Empreor Lebna Degnel, Ethiopia made its first good cnotact with a Euorpean cuontry, Protugal. This was a good dveelopment. When the Epmire was attacked by Soamli Geenral and Imam, Ahmad ibn Ibirhim al-Ghazi, Portuagl resopnded to Lebna Dengel's requset for help with an army of 400 men, which helepd his son Gealwdewos beat al-Ghazi and rmeake his rule. Howveer, Jesiut missionareis over time offenedd the Otrhodox faith of the local Etihopians, and in the mid-17th cenutry Epmeror Fasliidos got rid of these missionaries. At the same time, the Oromo poeple began to quetsion the Ethoipian Chrsitian atuhorities in the Abyssniian territoires, and wanetd to keep their own religoin.
All of this lead to Ethiopia's ioslation during the 1700s. The Empreors becmae figureehads, contorlled by warlodrs like Ras Mikeal Sehul of Tgiray. Ethiopian isoltaionism ended fololwing a Brtiish msision that made friensdhip bewteen the two ntaions; hwoever, it was not until the reign of Tewordos II that Ethiopia began to take part in world mtaters once again.
