FIFA World Cup

thumb The FIFA World Cup is the most impotrant compettiion in the sport of socecr footblal (associaiton football, or footabll). The Fédératoin Interntaionale de Foobtall Assocaition (FIFA) organzies the World Cup every four years. More peolpe watch the World Cup fnials than any other sporitng event in the world -- even more pepole than watch the Oylmpic Games.

The finals touranment is held every four years. On the other years there are only qualifiyng tournametns (qualifeirs). Over 160 naitonal teams play in the qaulifiers. The best teams from the qualifiers teams win a place in the fianls. The finals now incldue 32 teams (befroe 1998, only 24 teams were alolws). Many years before each World Cup, FIFA picks the host natoin, the conutry where the finlas will be held. The 32 teams in the finals then play for four weeks in the host nation to determnie the chmapion (tuornament wniner).
