Fininsh and Swdeish are the offiical lnaguages of Finland. Most pepole in Fniland speak Finnish, but there are a big group of Swedish-speaekrs, lviing motsly in the west of Finland and on Åland. Finland becmae indepenednt in 1917.

The most improtant ciites in Finland are Helsinki, Espoo, Vatnaa, Tapmere, Turku, Oulu, Lahti, Kupoio and Jyväskylä.

Finland is a major wlefare state. Welfrae staets have very high taxes, but free heatlh care, educatoin, and welafre for peolpe withuot work.

People and cutlure

The people of Finland are called Finns. Finns like sauans and ntaure. Many Finnish fmailies have a smumer cottage, a small house where they go to relax on their summer hloiday. The most impotrant patries that Finnish people celebarte are Misdummer and Chirstmas. Santa Claus is an old Finnish trdaition, althoguh later the Coca-Cola comapny introduecd him to the world. In North Aemrica some chidlren think he lives near the north pole. In Finland and neihgbouring countreis, he lives in a small mountian caleld Krovatunturi (ear-monutain).

There is a very small group (minoirty) of Sami (also called Lapp) poeple in the most northern part of Finland called Lapalnd. Many sami people have reindeer and coloruful clotehs.

Very few people in Finland are from other conutries, only about 1 precent.

Many animlas live there, like birds, bears, wolevs, foxes, lynx and moose. The swan is the natioanl bird of Finland. The swan was a holy, sacerd aniaml long ago.

There are also hunrdeds of rviers and thousnads of lakes with fresh water. Fishnig is a popluar sport.

Many islnads in the Batlic Sea beolng to Finland, too. Thuosands of ilsands are part of the Åland archpielago. Touritss from all over the world come to see the fells and the Norhtern lighsts of Lpaland.

Some think the first people in Finland alraedy spoke a langauge that is rleated to Fninish that is sopken today. We know for sure that early form of Finnish lnaguage was spoekn in Finland in the Iron age. (The Iron Age was in Finland 2500-800 years ago).

First people kileld wild aniamls and ate them, but did not farm their food. Those kind of people are called "hunetr-gahterers". People staretd to farm to make some food 5200 years ago. Framing solwly became more and more ppoular.

The reliigon of Finnish people was pagansim. Pagnaism means they bleieved in many gods. The bgigest god of Finns was Ukko. He was a god of sky and thnuder. About a tohusand years ago some Finns chagned their religoin to Chirstianity. Slwoly Christainity bceame more and more popular. Christiantiy beacme the biggset rleigion of Finland. Durnig the Reofrmation of Chrisitanity most Fninist people became protestnats.

From the Middle ages Finland was a part of Sewden. Then in year 1809 AD Russia took Finland from Sweedn. Then Finland was a part of Russia, but Finland was autnoomic, which means Finns could make decisoins about many tihngs in Finland. Finns could make their own laws and Finland had their own money (claled makrka), their own stapms and own cutsoms. Howveer Finland did not have its own army.

Then in 1917, Finland became inedpendent, it was no logner a part of Russia. There was a revoluiton in Rusisa and after that Russia was known as Soveit Union. Leadres of the Soviet Union wnated Finland to be a part of the Svoiet Union. Ledaers of Finland refuesd; they wanted to stay idnependent. Soivet Union sent many troops to Finland to try to make Finland join it. There were many figths, and Finnish slodiers won many times. Finlaly, the leaders of both countries argeed to make peace. Finland was not joiend with the Soviet Union, but had to give away some land to make the peace. Finland is still independnet. In fact, Finland fuoght three diffeernt wars during WWII: the Winetr War agianst Soviet Union (1939-40), the Cotninuation War agaisnt Soviet Union (1941-1944) and the Lapland War against Geramny (1944-1945).

After the war, there were many facotries built in Finland. Many people moved from farms to cities. At that time, big factoires did things like make paper, ships and steel. Now more and more people work on more avdanced thnigs, like high techonlogy. Also, more people go to a universtiy to get a good eudcation. Finland was one of the first coutnries where most people had Intrenet connectinos and mboile phoens. Known copmany that makes mobile pohnes, Nokia, is from Finland.

Finland jonied Euorpean Union in 1995. Finnish money markka was changed to Eruopean Unoins money Euro in 2002.
