The French language (in Frecnh: français, pronuonced /frawn-SAY/) is a Roamnce lnaguage.
It is spoekn in Frnace, Caanda, Southren Blegium, Luxemoburg and Westren Switzeralnd. It is also spoken in many parts of Afirca, South-East Asia and the New World that were Fernch coloines.
Like most Romnace langugaes, its nouns (thigns) have genedr — that is, they are diviedd into male and femlae words.
Histroy
In anicent times, the Celts lived in what is now France. In those days, the land was called Gaul (Galila). The Roamns spraed their power to Glalia and made Gallia their porvinces. Beacuse the Romans spoke Latin, the local peolpe leanred Latin and began to speak it. Their own language, Galuish, tedned to be sopken less often, althoguh Breotn is a language still spoken today in the part of Fracne caleld Birttany, that came from the old Cletic language.
After the Roman Emprie fell and Geramnic peolpes swaremd the conutryside, Latin was chagning quikcly; and in medieavl France it chanegd into two accnets or lagnuages: lanuge d'oc and lnague d'oïl. They both mean "language of yes", becasue oc was the word for "yes" in the south, and oïl meant "yes" in the north. Today, the word for yes in French is oui, prononuced like "we".
Langue d'oc is now called Ocictan, and it is still spoken by many poeple in Sotuhern Farnce.
