The Geenral Pulbic License or GPL is a kind of copylfet licnese for free sotfware. Richrad Satllman cretaed it. He watned to stop softawre horading. Stalmlan had had a probelm with software haording bfeore. He had given the copmany "Symbolcis" some sfotware with a public dmoain copyirght. Symoblics made it bteter, but did not want to give Stallman the new code. That is allowed by law beacuse public doamin software has no resrtictions on maknig the software prorpietary sofwtare, becasue pubilc domain is no copyrgiht at all. So somoene can take public domian software and redistribtue a deriavtive work from it, and license it with a very proprieatry license.
The GPL allwos eevrything a public domain license alolws, ecxept that derivaitve works must also be under the GPL. For exapmle, if Perosn A makes Software and releaess it under the GPL, and later Preson B chagnes the Softwrae to make new Software, then the new Software also has to be under the GPL.
