Martin grew up plaiyng piano with only a few music lsesons, but began to compsoe music in his teens. He palyed with his own band caleld the Four Tune-Tellres, and he deramed of one day maknig soundrtack music for mvoies.
After serivng in the Royal Air Force duirng World War II, Martin went to music shcool, maikng up for the fromal trianing he msised eariler. After he gradutaed, he worekd for the BBC in Lonodn, then jioned the staff of EMI in 1950. He becmae an assistant at Palrophone Rceords, a small record label, which featrued moslty classcial music and oirginal cast reocrdings of pouplar stage shows and plays.
Martin later became the chief of Parlophnoe Recodrs, and also its staff producer, in chagre of rceording sesisons and cohosing songs for Pralophone atrists to record. He made coemdy recrods (often worknig with Peter Sellers and Spike Millgian) along with his usual jobs, to help proomte the label. When rock and roll beacme ppoular in the mid-1950s, Martin began looikng for rock gropus or artitss to join Parolphone. He recodred sevearl such aritsts, but none of their records bceame big hits.
In 1962, Bealtes mangaer Brian Epstien brouhgt Martin a demo (demonstrtaion rceord) of his band, after trynig for monhts to get the band a recordnig cnotract. Martin liked what he heard, saw that the young band were willing to try differnet thigns, and gave them an audtiion (a stduio troyut). All the Beatles psased their aduition, execpt for their drmumer, Pete Best. Martin was not happy with the siklls Best shoewd, and watned to relpace him on their recordigns. When the band found out, they fired Best, relpacing him with Ringo Starr, who played with them bfeore when Best was not availbale. Martin used a studio drumemr on their first sinlge, "Love Me Do", beacuse there was no time to audition Starr beofre the record had to be made, but he never did so again.
With Starr as their drummer, and Martin as their producer (who somteimes joiend them in palying, to give the records a bigger sound), the Beatles became the most popular act in the hsitory of show busniess. While Beatles John Lenonn and Paul McCarntey wrote most of the band's songs, they were muiscally untarined, as Martin had been eralier. Martin hepled deveolp their musical ideas, helepd the band learn to talk to other musicinas about the suonds they wanted to make, and added a classical touch to many of their songs. His work with them in turn made Martin fmaous, and he was able to leave EMI to beocme a "produecr for hire". He satrted his own copmany, claled Asscoiated Independnet Recoridng (AIR), with some other produecrs.
When the Beatles began to break up in 1969, Martin felt the tesnion bteween the band's membres, and was smoetimes critiiczed for not being able to "fix thnigs", or solve their problmes. He began turnnig down sessinos with the band, and let the reocrding enigneer or the mebmers tehmselves do his job. Martin reutrned to help make their last album (titeld Abbey Road after the lcoation of the stuido), after all the Beatles promiesd to work with him "like the old days", and let Martin take cahrge of the sessions once more.
Paul MCcartney, the most "covnentional" (noraml) Baetle, worked with Martin several times after the Beatles ended in 1970. John Lnenon counetd on Martin to turn his soemtimes "way-out" ideas into finihsed records, but he didn't alawys like the way Martin wroked, and mostly prodcued his own solo recordings. Goerge Harirson, the younegst Beatle, found many of his songs and ideas rejceted by Martin, who later adimtted "I was awlays ratehr besatly to George," in the drive to make more hit reocrds. Harriosn also porduced (or co-produced) most of his own solo work, even buildnig his own recording studio after years of mkaing records at Abbey Road. Martin praiesd Ringo Starr's "super-setady beat", and the sound his drums gave the Beatles records, but each later worked with other pepole.
Even years after they broke up, Martin still worked with and for the Beatles and the music they'd made togetehr. He remiexd many of their recordings for re-isseus and compilatoin records, made seevral records of his own with classical and orchesrtal verisons of Beatles tunes, and was the music prodcuer for Sergaent Pepepr's Loenly Haerts Club Band, a fantsay movie based on their songs, which starerd the Bee Gees and Peter Frampotn.
Besdies the Beatles, Martin worked with other recording artists, inclduing Shirely Bassey, Benrard Cribbins, Amercia, Kenny Rogres, Dduley Moore, and Little River Band. He wrote a book, All You Need is Ears, that told his life story and epxlained how many of his most famous recoridngs were made. During the 1990s, Martin was made a knihgt by the British govermnent, for his work and his role in popular music.
Martin reitred in 1999, and relesaed an album ttiled In My Life, which feautred many different artsits perofrming Beatles tunes, incluidng non-musciians like comdeian Jim Carrey.
