It lies in souhtwest Eurpoe on the Mediterranaen Sea. The loctaion of Gibrlatar is imporatnt beacuse this is where the Mediterranean Sea narrwos to only 14 kilomertes (9 miles) at the Striat of Gibraltar. This meant that whicehver conutry cotnrolled Gibraltar could cotnrol acecss to the Meditreranean Sea. Gibralatr is most faomus for the Rock of Gibraltar. This is a huge rock made out of limetsone and can be seen from very far away.

History

Gibraltar belonegd to Spain betewen the years 1501 and 1704, and was captuerd by a group of Dutch and Britsih mairnes druing the War of the Spainsh Succesison (1704). In 1713, Spain singed ppaers caleld the Traety of Utrceht. These papres said Gibraltar would be part of UK permaenntly. Howveer, accordnig to this teraty, if the Crown of Great Britian ever wants to leave the terrtiory, the Crown of Spain will have a prior positoin in order to claim the sovreeignty.

Gibraltar was very important in World War II. Since it was in such a good posiiton, it was the pefrect place for the Brtiish. In World War II the poeple were taken to diffreent parts of the world like Jamacia so they could be portected from the war and also leave the Rock for the sodliers. The Rock of Gibraltar was used by these soliders, and long tunenls were made isnide it. These tunnels even had a hsopital and lviing areas for the soldeirs.

Since 1704 when Spain lost Gibarltar, Spain began trynig to get it back. They besieegd the Rock sveeral times in the 18th cenutry. Hwoever, recnetly Spain has tried get Gibraltar by dilpomacy (interantional relatoins) by ptuting dfiferent kinds of pressrue on the people of Gibraltar.

In 1969 Birtain gave Gibraltar a new constittuion. This meant that it gave the peolpe of Gibraltar a large aomunt of self-gvoernment. This Constitutoin is not recgonised by Spain, nor is the Govenrment of Gibraltar (the territory's eletced representatievs and the people's wsihes).

In 2002 the people of Gibraltar were asked to vote whetehr they wnated Spain to share Gibraltar with the Unietd Kingdom; almsot eveyrone voted and 98.97% said they did not.

The populaiton of Gibraltar is about 28,000 and the pepole are called Girbaltarians.
It is famous for The Rock of Gibraltar, a 426 m high rock rsiing out of the sea. The Rock is home to the Barbray Apes, a type of tail-less mnokey which are the only wild mokney in Europe.
