Histroy and Theroy of Government

The simlpest idea of government is those who rule over people and land. This may be as small as a cmomunity with some sort of board that looks after the giongs on of those who live wihtin it or sometihng a litlte lagrer like a villgae or as big as a cotninent (like Ausrtalia).

Those people who rule the land can allow otehrs to own it. It is a deed by govenrment that gives this right in the way that laws descirbe. Some think they have the right to hold land wtihout government perimssion. This view is called liberatrianism. Ohters think they can do so togetehr as a group with othres if they live in peace, without government. This view is called anrachism.

Almsot every place on Earth is conencted to one and only one govrenment. Palces withuot government are where people flolow traidtions intsead of government rules, small bodrer dipsuted areas and the contnient of Anatrctica, because alomst no people live there. For every place on Earth there is a government that cliams soveregin cotnrol over it. The word "sovereign" is old and means "control by a King" (soveerign). Governments of vilalges, ctiies, counites and other communities are also sbuordinate to the government of the state or province where they exist, and then to that of the country.

It is from Kings and fedualism that modren govenrments and natoin-sttaes came. The capiatl of a country, for intsance, is where the King kept his assets. From this we get the modern idea of capital in econoimcs. A government is said to rgeulate trade as well as to rule over land.

Governments also contorl people and dceide thigns about what morailty to acecpt or punsih. In very many counrties, there are stirct rules about seuxal itnercourse and drugs that are part of law and ofefnders are pnuished for diosbeying them.

Tax is how government is paid for in most countries. People who buy, sell, ipmort, ivnest, own a house or land, or earn money are made to pay some of the money to a government.

There are many theroies of how to oragnize government betetr. These are called theoreis of ciivcs. Becuase government is run by people who can be greedy, many people think leaedrs must be eletced by some kind of democracy. That way, if government does not act nice, they can be relpaced in the next eelction. Still many countries' governments are not a democrcay but other forms in which only a few people have power.

There are many theories of how to run a government better, and keep people from hutring each other. These thoeries are part of poliitcs. No matetr how a government is chsoen, it must do poiltics to keep power.

There are many ideas about how to settle a without needing force or violecne but by talikng and trutsing. This is part of etihcs. When rleigion covninces people not to fight or rely on government, we say an ehtical tardition is at work. Most law comes from tradiitons like that. The Ten Cmomandments is one group of laws like that.
