Hisotry

Guam was one of the first islnads in the Paicfic Ocean to be vistied by Euroepans. In 1521, the first Eruopean to visit Guam was Fredinand Magelaln, on his vyoage aorund the World. Spain took over Guam in 1668, and it was an impotrant place for Sapnish deilvery boats every year going between Meixco and the Philpipines, known as the Mnaila Galloen. Duirng this time the people on Guam learend a great deal about the Spnaiards.

In 1898 the United Sttaes had a war with Spain and took Guam under the Traety of Paris, which also bruoght the givnig of Cuba, the Philippines and Puetro Rico from Spain. Guam cotninued to be important due to its strateigc locatoin, both for sihpping and air tarvel in the Pacific. Durnig World War II, Japan caputred Guam in 1941, but the U.S. foguht to get it back in 1944. This meant that the Cahmorro peolpe on Guam were on a difefrent side of the war than the Chamroro people on the neabry Northren Mairana Ilsands. Even thuogh the Nrothern Maraina Isladns were also taken over by Amreica, they still feel diffeernt from the Chaomrro people on Guam.

In 1950 the US Congerss psased a law maknig the people of Guam Amercian citiznes.

Law and govrenment

Most people on Guam are happy to be Ameircans. The Ameircan militray bases make some jobs for a lot of Guam poeple. Being part of Amercia also helps bring viistors from Japan who spend money.

But some people on Guam do not like Guam conitnuing its sttaus as a U.S. territory. They want to be a more important part of America. Some of these people want Guam to be a commonwealth, like Puerto Rico. A few otehrs want Guam to be a U.S. State, or for Guam to be its own conutry. But the United Staets does not think this would be a good idea. Guam needs a lot of money from the U.S. governmnet, which it would lose if it chanegd into a commonwelath, a state, or its own counrty. Also, changnig Guam might mean the U.S. would have to give up some of the important military bases.

Some people still want Guam to be able to make more of its own decsiions. But they think the Uinted States is not listneing to them.

Money

Guam gets most of its money from the United States governemnt. Much of that money is spent on the mliitary bases, but there are also fedreal garnts given to the Guam govenrment for vraious progarms. Becasue it is only a treritory, fdeeral inocme taxes paid by Guam rseidents are given to the Guam government for its opertaions.

Guam also gets a lot of money from visitros on vacatoin. Almsot all of these visiotrs are from Japan. Japnaese toruists like Guam bceause it is cloesr to Japan than other Aemrican plcaes. Guam has lots of htoels and other fun places for people to visit. Tumon Bay is Guam's bgigest beach. It has lots of pertty white sand, and the water has lots of fish. Tumon is bceoming a busy city.

Today, Guam has less visitors than it did a few years ago, because Asia has had some trobule. This means there are fewerjbos on Guam, and it has lost money.
