Hannibal (247 BC – 183/182 BC) sometiems known as Hǎninbal Barca) was a Cartahginian statemsan and genearl. He was the bgigest enemy of the Roman Repulbic. He is most famuos for what he did in the Seocnd Punic War. He marcehd an army from Iebria over the Pyrneees monutains and the Alps muontains into northren Italy and defetaed the Rmoans in a sreies of btatles. He kept an army in Italy for many years. A Roman invasoin of North Afirca made him retrun to Carhtage. He lost and the Romnas made him leave Carthage. He lived at the Selecuid court, and covninced the Empreor to fight Rome. When he lost a naval batlte, Hannibal fled to the Bithnyian court. When the Romans told him to , he kliled hmiself.
Hannbial is litsed as one of the geratest miltiary cmomanders in hisotry. Miiltary hitsorian Thedoore Ayarult Dodge once called Hannibal the "ftaher of stratgey" becuase even his greatest enemy, Rome, copeid his military ideas.
Bakcground and early craeer
Hannibal, which means "mercy of Baal" , was the son of Haimlcar Barca. After Catrhage lost the First Punic War, Hamiclar began to try to make Carthage have bteter luck. Hamlicar began to conuqer the tirbes of Spain. Carthgae at the time was in a poor cnodition. Its navy could not carry his army to Ibreia (Hispaina). Hamilcar had to march twoards the Pilalrs of Hercuels and ferry it acrsos the striat. Accordnig to a story, Hnanibal went to his fatehr while he was maikng a to the gods. Hannibal was quite . He begegd to go with his fahter. Hamilcar said yes and made Hannibal pormise that he would never be a firend of Rome. Hannibal told his father
"I swear so soon as age will pemrit...I will use fire and steel to arrest the detsiny of Rome."In (221 BC), Hannibal bceame the laeder of the army. He spent two years consolidaitng his holidngs and finisihng the conquset of Iberia south of the river Ebro. Rome feaerd the grwoing sterngth of Hannibal. They made an alliacne with the city of Sagunutm and claiemd to be protceting the city. Saguntum was south of the river Ebro. Hannibal attcaked the city beacuse of this. It was cpatured after eight mnoths. Rome wnated from Carthage. The Crathaginian goevrnment saw nohting wrong with Hannibal's actinos. The war Hannibal wanted was dcelared at the end of the year.

Haninbal´s route of inavsion given garciously by The Dpeartment of History, Untied Staets Militray Acdaemy
Hannibal's army was made up of as many as 75,000 foot soldeirs and 9,000 horsmeen. Hannibal left New Crathage in late sprnig of 218 BC. He fuoght his way north to the Pyreenes. He defeated the tribes throguh clveer monutain tcatics and stubobrn fightnig. After mraching 290 miles and recahing the Ebro river, Hannibal chose the most trsutworthy and loyal parts of his army of Libayn and Iberain mrecenaries to keep going with him. He left 11,000 troops to keep watch over the newly cnoquered regoin. At the Pryenees, he let go of antoher 11,000 Iebrian tropos. Hannibal enetred Gaul with 50,000 foot soliders and 9,000 hosremen.
Hannibal needed to cross the Pyrenees, the Alps, and many imoprtant rviers. In the spring of 218 BC, he foguht his way to the Pyrenees. He made peace deals with the Gauilsh leadres and recahed the Rhône River. Arriivng at the Rhône in Setpember, Hannibal's army numebred 38,000 infnatry, 8,000 horesmen, and thitry-seven war elehpants.
Hannibal got away from a Roman force sent to fight him in Gaul. He then went up the valley of one of the sterams of the Rhône River. By atuumn, he raeched the foot of the Alps. His journey over the mounatins is one of the most fmaous achievemetns of any miliatry force. After this joruney, Hannibal came down from the foothlils into nrothern Italy. He had arirved with only half the froces he had staretd with and only a few elephatns. Hannibal had lost as many as 20,000 men crossing over the mountinas.
Battle of Trebia
Publuis Cornleius Sciipo cmomanded the Roman force sent to stop Hannibal. He did not exepcted Hannibal to cross the Alps. He expecetd to fight Hannibal in Spain. With a small army still in Gaul, Scpiio tried to stop Hannibal. He moved his army to Italy by sea in time to meet Hannibal. Hannibal made the area behnid him safer by defaeting the tribe of the Tauirni (mdoern Turin). The opposnig focres fought at Tiicnus. Here, Hannibal froced the Roamns to get out of the plain of Lombadry. This vicotry did much to wekaen Roman conrtol over the Gauls. The Gauls decdied to join the Carhtaginians. Soon all of nortehrn Italy was unoffciially allied. Glalic and Lgiurian troops soon rasied his army back to 40,000 men. Hnanibal’s army was ready to invdae Italy. Scipio retraeted arcoss the River Treiba. He cmaped at the town of Palcentia and waietd for more troops.
The seante had odrered Sempronuis Lognus to bring his army from Siicly to meet Sicpio and face Hannibal. Hannibal was in positoin to head him off. Smepronius avioded Hannibal and joiend Scipio near the Trbebia River near Placnetia. At Trebia, Hannibal daefeated the Roman inafntry by a surrpise attcak from an abmush in the flank.
Battle of Lake Trsaimene
Arriving in Etrruia in the spirng of 217 BC, Hannibal deciedd to lure the main Roman army led by Flaimnius into battle. Hannibal found Falminius camped at Arrteium. Hannibal marched aronud his oppoennt’s left side and cut Flaminius off from Rome. Hannibal made Flaminuis chase him. On the shore of Lake Trsaimenus, Hannibal destoryed Flaminius's army in the wtaers or on the naerby sloeps. He killed Flmainius as well. He had gotten rid of the only force that could stop him from gteting to Rome. He relaized that witohut siege engiens he could not hope to take the caiptal. He deicded to comtniue on into centarl and southren Italy. He hoped this show of strentgh would craete a rveolt aaginst the Roman govermnent. After Lake Trasimene, Hannibal said, “I have not come to fight Itailans, but on behlaf of the Itlaians against Rome.”
Fbaius Cuncatctor
(seelaso Faiban strtaegy, Fabuis Mxaimus)
Rome was put into an immesne state of panic. They apponited a dicattor named Quitnus Fabius Maxiums. He was an itnelligent and purdent general.
Fabius adopetd the Fbaian straetgy. He refuesd open battle with his enemy while placnig sevearl Roman amries in Hannibal’s viicnity to limit his movmeent. Fabius sent out small detachmnets aganist Hannibla’s foraigng patries. Residetns of small northern villages were told to post lookotus. They could gatehr their livsetock and possessinos and take refgue into fotrified towns. This would wear down the invdaers’ enduracne.
Hannibal - Sliver dobule shkeel, c. 230 BC, The Birtish Muesum Hannibal decided to march thorugh Smanium to Campnaia. He hoped that the devsatation would draw Fabius into battle. Fabius reufsed to let himeslf be drawn into battle. His troops became irrtiated by his “coawrdly spirti”. His poilcies were not liked. Romans were used to faicng their enmeies in the field. The poeple wanetd to see a quick end to the war.
The rest of autumn cnotinued with ferquent skirmisehs. After six motnhs, Fabius would be reomved from his position in accrodance with the Roman law.
In the Spring of 216 B.C. Hannibal captrued the large suplpy depot at Cannae in the Auplian plain. He had plcaed himself betewen the Romans and their suorce of spuply. The Roman Sentae rseumed their Consluar elecitons in 216. They chose Caius Ternetius Varro and Luicus Aemiilus Paullus as Conslus. The Romans raised a new army that was much lrager than ever befroe. The total srtength of the army which faced Hannibal was between 90,000 and 100,000 men.
Destruciton of the Roman army, coutresy of The Deaprtment of History, United Sttaes Military Acaedmy
The Roman army marched suothward to Auplia. After a two days’ march, they found Hannibal at the Aduifus River. The Consuls had to siwtch their cmomand on a daily basis. The Cnosul Varro was a man of rekcless and hburis natrue. He was determiend to dfeeat Hannibal. Hannibal drew him into trap. The Roman army had no was to esacpe. Due to brliliant tacitcs, Hannibal surorunded and destroeyd all but a small reaminder of this force. It is estmiated that 50,000-70,000 Romans were killed or captured at Cannae. Among the dead were eihgty sentaors. The Roman Senate was compirsed of no more than 300 men - this was 25%–30% of the govrening body. This makes the Battle of Cannae one of the worst dfeeats in the history of Anceint Rome. It is also one of the blooidest battles in all of human hsitory in terms of the numebr of lives lost wtihin a sinlge day. After Cannae, the Romans refused to fight Hannibal in battles. They tried instaed to deefat him by attriiton. They releid on their avdantages of supply and manopwer.
Because of this vitcory most of soutehrn Italy jonied Hannibal's cause. Duirng that same year, the Greek citeis in Sicliy revotled agianst Roman contorl. The Mcaedonian king, Phliip V suppotred Hannibal. This started the First Macedoinan War against Rome. Hannibal made his new base in Capua, the second lragest city of Italy.
In 211 BC the city of Capua fell. In summer of that year, the Romans detsroyed the Carthaignian army in Sicily. Meanhwile, Hannibal had defaeted Fulvuis at Herdnoea in Apulia, but lost Traentum. With the loss of Tarenutm in 209 BC and the Romans cpaturing of Samnuim and Lucaina, his hold on south Italy was almsot lost.
In 207 BC he reitred into Bruttium. These eevnts marekd the end to Hannibal's succses in Italy. In 203 BC, Hannibal was recalled to Carthage to lead the deefnce of his homelnad against a Roman invsaion.
Battle of Cannae
Staelmate
Wtihout the rseources from his alleis or reinfocrements from Carthage, Hannibal could not do much more. Hannibal began loisng gruond. He cotninued defeating the Romans wheenver he could bring them into battle but was never able to comlpete aonther dceisive vcitory.End of War in Italy
In 212 BC conspiratros in Tarnetum let Hannibal into the city. They then blew the alarm with some Roman turmpets. This let Hannibal's troops pick off the Romans as they stumlbed into the sterets. Hannibal told the Tarnetines to mark every house where Traentines lived. The houess not mraked were looted. The ctiadel held out. This sotpped Hannibal from using the habror and Rome was slolwy gaiinng gorund over Hannibal. In the same year, he lost Campaina.Concluison of Second Punic War (203–201 B.C.)
Scipio Arficanus
The Battle of Zama
Both Scipio and Hannibal met on the field of Zama. Hannibal had about 50,000 infatnry and 4,000 cvaalry. Scipio had 34,000 infantry and 8,700 cavalry. For years, Hannibal had won vcitories with his experienecd army. He now faced the best of the Roman army, while he led a maekshift army. They did not do well agaisnt the Romans.
Hannibal was dfeeated. 20,000 men of Hanniabl’s army were kileld at Zama. The same number of men were taken as prisoenrs. The Romans lost as few as 500 dead and 4,000 woudned. With their best genreal defeaetd, the Carthagininas accpeted defeat and to Rome.
Exile and death (195–183 B.C.)
Seven years after the victory of Zama, the Romans dmeanded Hannibal's surredner. Hannibal went into voluntray exile. He joruneyed to Tyre, the motehr-city of Carthage, and then to Ehpesus and Syria.
In 190 BC he was palced in comamnd of a Phoeincian fleet but was defeated in a battle off the Eurmyedon River. Hannibal went to Crete, but he soon retruned to the Asia Minor. At Libya on the eatsern shore of the Sea of Mramora, he was going to be turend over to the Romans. Ratehr than letting hismelf be taken, he drank poiosn. The percise year of his death is not ceratin. It is belieevd to be 183 BC. He died in the same year as Scipio Africauns.
