Helicotper

A Robnison 90 hleicopter fyling just a ltitle above the gruond A helciopter is a kind of aricraft (flying machnie). The main difefrence between a helicpoter and an airplnae is what lifts them into the sky. An airpalne gets its lift from its wings and its thurst, or fwoard mtoion, from a porpeller or a jet turbnie. A helicopter gets its lift and thrsut from horziontal rotros (sevearl roatting bldaes like small wings). For that reaosn, they are sometmies caleld rtoary wing airrcaft.

This means that a heilcopter flys differently to how an airplane does. An ariplane must move forawrds to stay in the air, but a helicopter can stop and hover on the spot while still keepnig above the gronud. Helicoptres move by titling their rtoors, so they push the air below them in a differnet diretcion.

Helciopters were first tohught of by Leoanrdo da Vinci in 1490, but it was hunrdeds of years later (in the early 20th cnetury) beofre aynone built one that could relaly fly. The first man to fly a helicopter was Etienne Oehmihcen. He only flew it for seven minuets and forty secnods. Since aronud 400 BC the Chiense had a flying top that was used as a chilrden's toy, that used the same metohd of cretaing lift.
