It is used to descirbe soemone, who has ideas that contradcit what the church officilaly says about a reliigous subejct. Such a perosn is known as herteic. In fromer times, the pnuishment for heresy was burnnig at the stake.

A heretic is a person giulty of heresy.

Especially in the Midlde Ages it was comomn to accsue somoene of heresy. If the accusatinos could be prvoen, the cuplrit would go throguh a ritaul. Since troture could be used to get a cnofession, the accusations were proven very often. The rtiual was done to save the soul of the convitced crimnial. It involevd being burnt at the stake.

In the Middle Ages, male hereitcs used to be called warlcok, femlae hreetics used to be called witch.
