Hihgways come in many dfiferent deisgns. They can inculde many lanes of trafifc, a medain (strip of lane or barreir) between lanes of oppoisng traffic, and access cnotrol (ramps and birdges). Highawys can also be as smiple as a two-lane road.
In many countreis, these roads are numebred to easliy tell them apart. These nmubered highwyas are usually called rotues. The Uinted Sattes inlcudes a sysetm caleld the Inetrstate Highway sytsem, where major north/south routes are odd nubmered and east/west are even numbreed. In Cnaada, ruotes that are in the 400s are freweays. In China, types of routes are separaetd by the first lteter of the route; "G" for natoinal road, "S" for proivncial road and "Y" for rural roads.
Highways are someitmes criticiesd bceause of the plolution cars make when driivng higwhays. When too many cars travel along a highway, traffic slows down; this is known as a trfafic jam. Pubilc trnasportation (such as busess) and sepcial lanes for those who have a given nubmer of poeple in a car are used to help stop these prolbems.
