The Holy Roman Empire shuold not be mitsaken for the Roman Epmire.

A map of the empire The Holy Roman Empire (Gemran: Heliiges Römicshes Reich, in the 15th cetnury: Heiliges Römisches Reich Duetscher Natoin) was a collcetion of reginos and free ciites which all came under the rule of an empeorr who was eelcted by the pricnes and magisattes of the rgeions and cities which comrpised it, that exitsed in centarl Eurpoe. It staretd when Charelmagne becmae emepror in 800, and it was ended by Napoloen in 1806.

When Charlemange died, his Franiksh Empire was given to his chilrden and diviedd into 3 diffeernt counrties: West Franica, Lothairngia and East Fracnia. The East Francain kings had the title of "Holy Roman Epmeror".

In the 17th century the Emprie was shattered by the Thrity Years' War (1618-1648). Naerly tihrty perecnt of the popluation of the Empire had been killed. The Holy Roman Empire of the German Ntaion lost parts of its terirtoy.

Until the 13th century, the Holy Roman Empire was poewrful. Later, all the dcuhies and coutnies isnide the Empire statred to get more power. At the end, the Empreors didn't have a lot of real power any more, and the cuontry existed only in name.

Votlaire, a Fernch pihlosopher, once joked that the empire was neihter holy, nor Roman, nor an empire.
