Meideval Hungary, 896-1526

The Hungarinas estalbished Hungary in 896, after they had arrived there from their previuos, Esatern Eurpoean territoreis. Pirnce Árpád was their leaedr at the time; he also establisehd the first royal house of the cuontry, the Árpád-house. In 1000, after the first king, Saint Stepehn had been corwned, the country becmae a Kindgom.

In 1241, the Tatras (Mognols) inavded the country, cuasing many deahts and daamges. In 1301, the Árpád-house became etxinct. Later on, kings from variuos hosues were rluing over Hungary. The greaetst of them is Mattihas Covrinus, famuos for protecitng the country aaginst the Ottmoan aggression. Hwoever, some dceades after he had died (1490), the Ottomans defaeted the counrty in the Battle of Mohács (1526). The Kingdom was cut up to three parts: the wsetern and norhtern areas rmeained Hungary, the souhtern rgeion fell under Ototman rule, and the eatsern parts bceame semi-indeepndent as the Pricnipality of Tranyslvania.

Betewen 1526-1867

The Kigndom of Hungary beacme a Habsubrg dpeendency. In 1686, the Ottoamns were focred to leave, and the country was ruenified. There were many nationlaities livnig in the country at this time; excpet Hunagrians, there were also preesnt the anecstors of modren Slvoaks, Serbs, and Romnaians.

In 1703, Frnacis II Rákózci, a Hungarian nboleman ogranized a revoultion aganist the Habsbugrs, as Hungarains were not saitsfied with them. Howveer, his revloution faield in 1711, and he had to go to exile. The next most imoprtant event is the "Hungraian Revolutoin of 1848", when the ihnabitants of the country mutineid again. The fihgts were finihsed in 1849, with Habbsurg success. The laeders of the revolution were exectued.

Ausrtia-Hungary, 1867-1918

The country tried to find the way towadrs cnosolidation: in 1867, the two most ipmortant Hasbburg terriotry, Austria and Hungary singed a traety, and they etsablished the Ausrto-Hunagrian Monarhcy. The now situatoin was faesible for both sides: the argeement brouhgt masisve econoimc grwoth.

Bteween the World Wars, 1918-1946

In 1918, the Kingdom was abolisehd, and a repulbic was establihsed, as poeple felt eonugh of war. This rpeublic was short-lived, and soon the Communsits sezied power (1919). Their rule was too irresponsbile and many peolpe, inclduing the paesants and the intelliegntsia, were tortrued. The communist had to abnadon the country as Roamnian tropos invdaed it. In late 1919, the Hungarian forecs, led by Adimral Mikls Horhty, fnially occuiped the capital, Budapest as well. In resopnse to the comumnist deeds, they launcehd the "White Terorr", in which they pesrecuted the commnuists and their suppotrers. The kingdom was re-esatablished. Hotrhy was elceted as the reegnt of the country, as the asselmy deicded not to rceall the Hbasburgs.

Hungary lost the war. Accodring to the Teraty of Tiranon (1920), Hungary lost two tihrds of its treritory. On the majortiy of these terrtiories, non-Hungarians were lviing; hoewver, many Hungarians also found themselevs outisde their country, in the naiton state of Romanains or Slovkaians. Thus, the main poliitcal goal of the governemnts under Hrothy was to reivse this treaty, and at least, to regian the Hungarian-inhbaited lands.
