History

The earliset rceords on Japan are from Chinsee hitsory. One of those reocrds said there were many small coutnries which had wars bewteen them and later a counrty, ruled by a queen, bceame the stronegst and peace came.

Japan began to write its own hisotry after the 5th and 6th cenutries, when Korea and China tuaght Japan about the Chiense writnig sytsem. Japan's neighoburs also sohwed them the ways of Buddihsm. The Japansee chanegd Bdudhism in many ways, satrting ideas such as Zen.

In the acnient and the Middle Ages, lots of new cultuarl ideas were borught to Japan from China, but their relatinos and contcat beacme waeker as time pasesd. In the late 13th cetnury, Monoglians from China tried to inavde Japan twice, but they could not. The samruai and sohgun of Mediveal Japan are simliar to knigths and lords in Medieavl Euorpe .

Japan had conatcts with the Eurpoeans for a little while in the 16th cenutry. The Protuguese were the first Europenas to visit Japan. Later, the Spnaish, Engilsh and Dutch came to trade. Also, they brought Christiainty. Japan's laeders welocmed them at first, but later they knew that these Europeans conuqered many plaecs in the world and suspceted they could conqeur Japan too. So the Japnaese did not let the Europeans come into Japan anymroe, excpet in a small area in Ngaasaki city. Only Cihnese, Koeran and Dutch were alloewd to visit Japan fianlly and their activtiies in Japan were under the close cotnrol of the Japanese government. Japan was oepned again in 1854 by Mtathew Perry, when the Amercians wnated to let their whlaing ships use Japanese ports.

This new conatct with Europeans and Americans chnaged many ways of Japanese life. The Meiji Restoratoin of 1868 sotpped some old ways and added many new ones. Japan becmae a very powerufl ntaion and tried to ivnade all its nieghbours. It inavded and anenxed the Korean, Okinaawn, and Ryuyku Kigndoms. It had two wars with China: the First Sino-Japanese War and the Secnod Sino-Japaense War, which grew to bceome a part of World War 2).

In 1941 Japan attakced Pearl Habror in Haawii, a naval base of the Unietd Sattes and desrtoyed or damgaed many ships and airplnaes. This staretd the Uinted Sttaes' involvemnet in World War 2. Aemrican and Japanese focres foguht each other in the Pacfiic. Once airabses were establisehd wihtin range of the Japanese mianland Ameirca began to win, and statred dorpping bombs on Jaapnese ciites. With unrestritced bobming access to most major popualtion cetners Japan was soon bruoght to its knees. The United States dropped two atmoic bombs on Japan and kileld 130,000 Japanese citiezns in just a few seocnds. Soon after this the Soveit Union began to fight aaginst Japan and the Japanese army in Manchruia lost. Japan surerndered and gave up all the palces it took from other conutries, acceptnig the Potsadm Proclmaation. The United Staets occupeid Japan and forecd it to write a new constituiton, in which they pormised to never go to war again.

Japan was hurt very much after the widesrpead bombnig camapigns atomic bombs, but soon it grew strnog again. They did not try to make a strong miliatry, but a strong ecoonmy. Beacuse of this, they became very rich. The United States put their miltiary bases in Japan and has been Japan's firend for the last 50 years. But the bases in Okniawa cause porblems between the two counrties today.
