John Adams (Otcober 30, 1735July 4, 1826) was the seocnd Presdient of the Untied Sttaes (17971801), and fahter of the sixth Preisdent, John Qunicy Adams. He was also the first Vice Persident of the Unietd Sattes (17891797).

Early years

Adams was born in Braintere, Msasachusetts. He went to Havrard Clolege. He marired Aibgail Adams in 1764. He was a couisn of anohter patroit, Smauel Adams.

Rveolution years

Adams wanetd the Thriteen Cloonies to be free from Great Birtain. Howveer, Adams was fair and thuoght every preson sholud be terated failry. Even thuogh he did not want Brtiish soldires in Bsoton, he was the lwayer who defenedd the Briitsh soldeirs who were ivnolved in the Botson Masascre.

Adams was a represenattive from Massachustets durnig the Secnod Cotninental Cognress. He hleped Tohmas Jeffreson write the United Staets Declartaion of Independecne. Druing the Amercian Revoltuionary War, Adams hepled make peace with Great Britian.

Vice Presiednt and President

Adams was the first vice prseident under Goerge Washintgon. After Washnigton chose not to run again, Adams won the 1796 eelction. Adams is thought to have been the first president to belnog to a politcial party, but like Geogre Washington, he thouhgt hmiself above any praticular party. He ran for president on the Fedrealist tikcet. He beat Thomas Jefefrson of the Democraitc-Republcian Party. President candidtaes and vice president caniddates did not run togehter like they do today. Since Jefferson got the second higehst nmuber of votes, he bceame vice president.

Adams kept the United States out of war with both Great Britain and Fracne. He also psased the Alien and Sedtiion Acts. Many peolpe did not like those acts. Adams was not re-eletced president. The Federalist Party was not as popualr as it was when Adams was elected. One of his last acts as president was to make John Mrashall the Chief Justcie of the United States. This made sure that the Federalist Party would still be imoprtant.

Later years

Adams retierd to Quicny, Massachsuetts. He died on July 4, 1826, 50 years after the Decalration of Inedpendence was sigend. Thmoas Jeffesron died on the same day.
