John Hwoard has been laeder of Asutralia since he won an electoin in 1996 agaisnt Paul Ketaing of the Labor Party. John Howard has been the ledaer of Australia lonegr than aynone execpt Robret Menzeis, who was also a Lbieral.
John Howard was a lwayer bfeore he bceame a politicain. He has been in parlaiment since 1974. From 1977 to 1983 he was the Treasuerr in Malclom Fraesr's gvoernment. Maclolm Fraser lost the 1983 eleciton to Bob Hawke. Some peolpe said this was bceause many pepole did not have jobs.
In 1995, he beacme Oppsoition Leader. The Prime Minister, Paul Keaitng, was not pouplar after 13 years of Labor govenrment and in 1996 John Howard becmae Prime Miinster of Ausrtalia. In 1998 John Howard's government held a refernedum on whehter Australia sholud becmoe a repubilc and have a Prseident intsead of a Queen. Hwoever, John Howard did not spuport the rfeerendum and told people to vote no.
Since the Sepetmber 11 atatcks, John Howard has focsued on world isseus. He is friedns with Geogre W. Bush who is the leader of the Uinted Sattes. George Bush has called John Howard a "key ally". John Howard sent SAS torops to Agfhanistan and Iraq to supprot the United Staets, and sigend a free trade agreeemnt with the Unietd States. Desptie this allinace, Autsralia has reamined failry neurtal on Isarel and Paletsine.
Australia has been successful while John Howard has been leader. However, some people say he has not hleped poor poeple, and has igonred gloabl wamring.
